MY 1972 have you forgotten what it’s like to be like us? and have you no recollection of those endless nights? driving around at four in the morning barely able to see the lights have you ever been so tired, you can’t see what the mirror’s reflecting? after the music you’re on your way home, and you can’t get out of your head the endless beating of the bass drum surrounding you it’s a feeling that’s known as fickle youth have you ever had friends like these? in all the commotion it’s a breath of fresh air to be free do you have no memories about a girl that drops you to your knees? were you ever, a screwup, a disappointment like me? get what we try to tell you remember the year 1972 you’d finally made it and nothing was holding you down it was all a memory as important as the ground beneath your feet, and do you recall not worrying about getting sent to the off(ice) 1972 (TOMMY'S EXPLANATION: these are the oldest lyrics we use, and they remain mostly unchanged. they just seem to capture the essence of the time and place they were written... it was written after i came back from seeing weezer in 2001 for the first time, and it's basically summarizing the fun of that night; in addition the song contains "let me be myself" undertones that one would somewhat expect to be written by a 14 year old. which they were. but it's a fun song, not to be taken too seriously)
