| What is your name? Nancy Hickey |
| Tell us a bit about yourself I am a Newfoundlander proud bunch we are. I have a tendency to turn every position I have ever held into a caregiver role. So I decided to stop making my life harder and just care for the babies. I love a good joke. I love to bake. I love to go out for a scoff and a scuff (dinner and a dance). I do all the silly things it takes to let my own children know I care.. including sliding ..aka.. tobogganing and bruising my arse during a wipe out! I have big ideas and not enough time to get everything done. I am a garage sale queen. I can spot a bargain a mile away.. but no one needs 3 sets of sofas! I like things to be clean.which is more difficult when you increase the amount to need cleaning! I still cant quite get the idea that I dont need to store a months groceries just in case; because there is a 24 hour grocery store is across the street. I am sincere. I never judge anyone because I know I am a long chalk off of perfect , myself. My mother taught me to forget about yesterday make the best you can out of today and tomorrow will take care of itself. My friends are always welcome at my place with a heart and a half. |
| Where are you located? # 22 Pembry Drive, Ajax |
| What is your Daycare name? Nancys Nest |
| How did you come up with your daycare name?
Looked for a word that rhymed with my first name as it is the first thing to which the children will relate. |
| How long have you been providing daycare?
In My home in Ajax since Feb 2005. In general I completed my ECE in July 1992 and have been involved ever since. |
| What was your "inspiration" to get involved in the daycare field?
I loved children even as a child. My grandmother (who had a large family in Newfoundland) would have me take care of all the grandchildren (as I was the oldest) during family visits and holidays. |
| What is your favorite part of your "new" profession?
That it is my own space. I am not in a formal Institutional Childcare setting. I personally feel as a mother that children need a loving caring nurturing home environment in which to thrive during the preschool years. They have lots of time for an Institutional setting at school age. I think children get their self esteem from social interaction and play; as they learn valuable life skills. |
| What was your old profession?
I was a child care provider for the University in Newfoundland for years. Shortage of work forced my husband and I to move. Once in Toronto I took a position with Sunnybrook Hospital As the Educational assistant for The advanced Trauma and Advanced Cardiac Life support Courses. Once I had my own children; there was no question that I was going to stay home with them and give them the opportunity to have friends come in to play. |
| If you had a $1000 to spend on things for your day care, what would you buy?
I would like to replace a lot of the plastic toys with wood. Wooden shape sorters, wooden blocks, wooden trains |
| How did you learn about the daycare association?
Through a fellow daycare provider. We met at the OEYC and she mentioned it one day . |
| How long have you been a member of the day care association?
Since August/September of 2006. |
| Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still as a child care provider trying to convince my husband to let me assume the basement space for my set up. |
