GHAIB (UNSEEN)

3:179 UNSEEN KNOWLEDGE OF

HOLY PROPHET

3:179 “ Allah does not like to leave the believers in a state in which they

are at the moment unless he separates the bad (i.e. hypocrites) from

the good (i.e. believers). And (again) Allah does not like to let you know

the unseen, but Allah selects from among the Messengers whom He

wills (for such a purpose). Therefore, believe in Allah and His

Messenger (about unseen matters); and if you believe and fear Allah,

then for you is a great reward”. [4:113;72:26,27;81:24]

NOTE :

1. The hypocrites (who betrayed in Uhud etc.) were exposed and shunted out through the natural processes like tests / trials, wars, calamities etc. Some of them were also exposed and shunted out by the Holy Prophet himself due to his unseen knowledge. It has been reported in Zia-ul-Quran on the authority of ‘Tafseer Ruh-ul-Muani etc. that on one occasion the Holy Prophet while delivering Friday speech, pointed out specifically towards some of the hypocrites and expelled them from the mosque.

(Zia-ul-Quran under 9:101)

2. When the Holy Prophet was returning from Tabuk, about 12 hypocrites planned to throw him in a deep dangerous ditch. A Companion of the Holy Prophet requested him to order for their killing. The Holy Prophet replied:

“ I don’t like that the Arabs may say that Muhammad

(peace be upon him) continued to fight with the help

of his people against his enemy, and when he

overpowered them, he started killing his

own people”. (Zia-ul-Quran under 9:74)

Further Verses of Al-Quran about the Prophet’s Unseen Knowledge:

1. “ He (Allah) is All - knowledgeable of the unseen, and He discloses

His unseen (knowledge) to none except to a Messenger whom He

selects (for this purpose)…. (72:26,27)

2. “ And he (Muhammad - peace be upon him) does not hold back the

(knowledge of) unseen.” (81:24)

3. “ And Allah sent down to you (Holy Prophet) the Book (Al-Quran) and

Al-Hikmah (Sunnah) and taught you which you did not know. And

the Grace of Allah on you is Ever Great”. (4:113)

It must be noted that the Holy Prophet did not know the unseen by himself. In fact, Almighty Allah granted him the knowledge of the unseen, as stated in the above Verses.

Allah alone is A’lim-ul-Ghaib & Alla’m-ul-Ghuyub.

(6:73;23:92;32:6;39:46;59:22) (5:116)

The Holy Quran states:

“ Say (Holy Prophet)! I don’t say to you that I have the treasures of

Allah, neither I say that I know the unseen (by myself), and nor I say

that I am an angel. In fact, I follow only that is revealed to me…” (6:50)

The Background for the above Verse (3:179) on the Unseen Knowledge:

On the authority of Allama Baizawi and Tafseer Kha’zin, the following ‘Hadith’ has been reported in ‘Tafseer Zia-ul-Quran’ under 3:179:

The Holy Prophet (in a sitting) stated to his Companions, as below:

“ My Ummah (nation) was presented to me and I, then, knew those,

who will believe in me and also those, who will deny”.

None of the believers objected to the Prophet’s knowledge. The hypocrites, however jokingly said: ‘ His (i.e. the Prophet’s) claim is that he knows every believer and every non - believer, whereas we (the hypocrites) remain with him all the time , but he does not know us’….

When the (above) statement of the hypocrites was reported to the Holy Prophet, he rose to the rostrum of the mosque and addressed, as below, after glorifying Almighty Allah:

“ What will be the state of affairs of a people, who criticize my

knowledge? You may ask me any question about the events

occurring from now onward till the establishment of the Day

of Judgement, and I will answer right here so long as I am standing’.

On this, Abdullah bin Huzafa (about whose father, people raised doubts) stood up and submitted: ‘ Allah’s Messenger! Who is my father? He replied: “ Huzafa”. [This removed the doubts from the minds of the people.]

Then, Umar bin Khattab requested the Holy Prophet to forgive them, but he continued to repeat the words: “ Will you stop criticizing my knowledge or not?” The Holy Prophet then stepped down. And it was, at that time, that the above Verse 3:179 was revealed.

[A similar Hadith has been reported in Bukhari:6678.]
