3:121-180 THE BATTLES OF BADR & UHUD

3:121 “ And remember (Holy Prophet), when you left your family behind (in

Madina) early in the morning and were stationing the believers in their positions

for fighting (in Uhud), and Allah hears and knows every thing.” *

* After stationing his troops in the battle of Uhud, the Holy Prophet ordered them not to fight, unless he permitted them. He then ordered the archers under the command of Abdullah bin Jubair to stop the cavalry of the enemy with their arrows on the crucial mountain pass so that they might not attack from the rear. He clearly ordered them to hold the pass under all circumstances - victory or defeat.]

[Seerat-un-Nabi by Ibn Hashsham, Vol.II, P.46, Ghulam Ali & Sons.]

3:122 “ When two groups from amongst you were just thinking to lose their

hearts, but Allah was their Supporter (and boosted their morale). And on Allah

(alone) the believers must depend with confidence.” *

* [Before reaching Uhud, Abdullah bin Ubayy (who was the leader of the hypocrites) separated with his companions. On this, two groups of the Muslims (i.e. Bani Haritha and Bani Salma) lost courage. (See Zia-ul Quran & Tafheem-ul-Quran under 3:122. Also see Bukhari:4282). Almighty Allah encouraged them by revealing the above Verse.

3:123 “ And, of course, Allah granted you victory (before) at Badr, when you were too weak. So fear Allah (only) so that you may be grateful”. *

* In Surah Al-Anfal, it has been stated:

[“ And remember, when you were small in number, recognized as weak

in the land, and you were scared of people so that they may not snatch

you away, but He (Allah) provided you a place of security (i.e. Al-

Madina), supported you with His assistance, and gave you pious things

for living so that you may be grateful (to Him)”. (2:214) ]
