3:77 COMMITMENT /PROMISE

3:77 “ Verily, those who purchase a worthless benefit against their

commitment with Allah and also against their oaths, such are the people:

i) who have no share, at all, in the Hereafter,

ii) Allah will neither talk to them nor look at them on the Day of Judgement,

iii) nor He (Allah) will purify them (from their sins), and

iv) for them will be a painful torment.” *

* A similar punishment will be given to those, who conceal the truth from the Revealed Book, as mentioned in 2:174. Al - Quran states:

“ Verily, those who conceal (the truth) that Allah has sent down from the

Book, and purchase a worthless benefit, they eat in stomach nothing

but fire. And Allah will neither talk to them on the Day of Judgement

nor purify them from their sins. And for them is a painful torment.”

(2:174)

Concealment of Truth & Fulfillment of Promise:

1. The Descendants of Israel concealed the truth about the Last Prophet.

(The punishment for such people has been mentioned in 2:174 above.)**

2. The Descendants of Israel broke away their promise that they made with Almighty Allah through their Prophets that they would believe in the Last Prophet, as mentioned in 3:81,187;5:12;7:156,157;61:6. (The punishment for such people, who violate their commitment with Allah has been stated in the above Verse 3:77.)

3. The Christians broke away their commitment with Allah and, therefore, Almighty Allah has developed enmity and hatred between them till the Day of Judgement.” (5:14). Similarly, Almighty Allah has developed enmity and hatred between the Jews till the Day of Judgement.

(5:64) [See also 5:13; 2:89,61;3:112;4:155;7:167;17:5-7]

4. The people will be questioned about their commitment on the Day of Judgement. (17:34)

5. Those, who break away their promise again and again are the worst creature. (8:55,56)

6. The believers have been commanded to fulfil their promise.

(2:177;5:1,7;13:19-25;16:91-95;17:34;23:8;)

7. The believers have been commanded to fulfil their commitment or agreement /pact made with other nations. (4:90)

8. If the believers fear betrayal from any nation / people, they should throw back the agreement on them. (8:58)

** Note: The next Verse 3:78 states a method of concealing the truth that the Jews used (i.e. Distortion of Book)

3:78 DISTORTION OF BOOK

3:78 “ And, indeed, there are some from amongst them, who twist their

tongues in order to distort (the meaning of) the Book so that you may

think that this is from the (original) Book, whereas (the fact is that) this is

not from the Book. And they say that this is from Allah, whereas it is not

from Allah; and (thus) they fabricate a lie against Allah deliberately”.

The People of the Book distorted their Book by 4 methods:

1. They listened to their Book (i.e. the Torah) and presented it to the people in a different way, deliberately. (2:75)

2. They write the Book with their own hands and say that it is from Allah. (2:79)

3. They replace the words from their positions. (5:13)

4. They twist their tongues for distorting the meaning of the Book. (3:78;4:76)

Back ground for the Next Verses 3:79,80

The People of the Book distorted their Book and declared Prophet Jesus as the Son of Allah as well as one of three Gods. The next Verses, therefore, shatter their belief by stating that no human being after getting the Book, power and Prophet –hood, ordered the people to become his slaves rather than of Allah, since all the Prophets strongly preached the Oneness of Allah. Now study the next Verses. How can a Prophet order the people to become his slaves rather than of Allah? This, in fact, would have been a great allegation against the Prophets. No Prophet could ever dare to order the people to set aside the Commandments of Allah and accept his authority and the laws like that of a king or a dictator. This indicates that there is no monarchy, kingship, lordship etc. in Islam where the people can be enslaved. No head of an Islamic Government / State can enslave the people and usurp their rights, since all have equal rights. Now study the next Verses.
