Introduction:

1. It is the largest chapter of the Holy Quran with 286 Verses.

2. It states about the believers (Muslims),disbelievers & Hypocrites.(2:1-25)

3. The tenets of Islam, as below, have been emphasized in this chapter:

a) Belief in the Oneness of Almighty Allah (2:21,22,28,29,46,83,103,126,138,163-167,177,255-26,284-28

b) Belief in the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)(2:23-25,41,89,103-105,119-121,128,143-147,151,177,252,253,285)

c) Prayers (2:43-45,110,153,177,277)

d) Jihad (Holy War) (2:153-157,190-195,214-219,246-252,286)

e) Spending in the Way of Allah (2:3,3, 43,177,215,219,254,261-281)

(Zakat or Obligatory Spending & Optional Spending)

f) Fasting in the month of Ramadan (2:183-187)

g) Hajj or Pilgrimage to Mecca ( 2:128,189,196-203)

4. The Superiority of Prophet Adam over the Angels (2:30-39)

5. A brief history of disobedience of the Jews has been stated. They disobeyed the Commandments of Almighty Allah and tried to kill His Prophets. Accordingly, they earned Allah’s wrath and lost their superiority. Finally, when they refuted the Last Prophet, after recognizing him, the curse of Almighty Allah fell upon them, and they earned His severe wrath (2:40-122).

6.The Muslims have been declared as the Best Ummah, having the optimum values of life. (2:142-150)

7.The Commandments relating to the following have also been stated so as to keep the Islamic society free of evils and socio-economic exploitation:

a) Unlawful food (2:173)

b) Intoxicants-Unlawful (2:219)

c) Bribery & Corruption. (2:168,169,188)

d) Law of Qisas etc.

e) Shameful acts (2:268)

f) uprooting usury. (2:261-282).

g) Marriage, divorce, baby caring, kindness to women.(2:221-241)

h) Spending money on the down-trodden , advancing loans free of interest.

i) Written documents and witnesses needed in loans, business and in the courts of justice (2:282)
