*Beep beep beep.* Michael reached over and flipped the alarm off. He stumbled out of bed and to the bathroom. He looked at himself in the mirror and burst out laughing. His hair was sticking out all over the place. He turned the shower on and stepped in to the tub. The water cascaded over him and he thought about the past 8 months. He had been living on his own for 6 months now and he loved it. One of conditions he had, had to agree to in order to become legally responsible was he had to go to school everyday. He knew that no matter what he would never get used to waking up at 7:00 every morning. In fact he didn't think he would ever get used to half the things that had changed since he had become a legal adult. He had lived with Maria and her Mom for the first 2 months, until he had raised enough money to get an apartment.
He had worked every week day after school as bus boy at the Crashdown. It had been hard but he wouldn't trade his new life for anything. It was all worth the freedom he had, had in the last 8 months. He was jolted out of his thoughts by the stream of cold water that shot down his neck. "Crap!! That's cold!!" He turned off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist. He walked to the kitchen and started the coffee before heading back to his bedroom. He had just closed the door when he heard the door bell.
"Dammit Maxwell, you always show up at the worst times!!" he mumbled to himself as he made his way to the front door. He opened the door and proceeded to lecture his friend "Maxwell normal people don't show up at people houses this early in the morn..." He stopped and drew in a sharp breathe. He was surprised to find that his visitor wasn't Max. A girl in a brown suede jacket and black jeans was starring at the ground her face turning bright red. He pulled his towel tighter around his waist and surveyed his unexpected visitor. The girl had dark hair that hung in limp curls around her face and he thought he detected a hint of blue hidden behind her thick lashes, she was covered in dust and looked as if she was likely to collapse of exhaustion at any second. "Umm would you like to come in while I change into some clothes" he asked her with concern. Not bothering to look up she followed him into the living room. He gestured toward the couch and left the room leaving her alone to think.
//Dammit Maya!!! What the hell made you think that you could find dad with just a first name and a town!! She had only been 16 for two days now but so far she hated it. Her mom had told her after the accident to find her father. She hadn't wanted her to end up in one of those foster homes. It had been a week since the funeral and since she had left Cortez. She had spent the last 6 hours on a bus full of drunken slobs who had tried to grope her and had gotten to Roswell to find out from the sheriffs department that she would have to find a Michael Guerin to get any information regarding her father.//
Maya looked up as Michael entered wearing a white wife beater and a pair of black jeans. He walked over and sat in the easy chair across from her. Maya drew in a breathe and summoned all her courage telling herself that she had to find out the truth. She looked at the man sitting in front of her and began. "Right your probably wondering why a person you don't know would just show up on your door step. First of all my names Amaya, Amaya Skye Andersen if you want to be legally correct but everyone calls me Maya or Kyla which ever you prefer. The sheriffs department sent me here, they told me you could tell me about my father." Michael looked up at her quickly. She shrugged nervously and pulled her jacket tighter around her body. "My mom was in a car crash two weeks ago and she wanted me to find my father, she didn't know anything about him except for his name and where he lived, Roswell New Mexico. She told me to go to him, she didn't want me to be put in a foster home. So I spent the last 6 hours on a bus full of drunken men and I went to the sheriffs department. The sheriff told me to come here so that's why I'm here" She finished and sat back in exhaustion. Michael swallowed and tried to collect his thoughts. Maya saw the confused look on his face and realized her error. "Oh right I guess it would help if you knew his name. I only know his first name, my mom said it was a stupid one night stand type of thing, so his name is Hank"
Michael sat silently for a few seconds before he stood up and began pacing around his kitchen. //Damn Hank!!! He had finally picked up all the pieces of his life and Hank had fucked it up again!!! What the hell was he supposed to tell her. "Sorry Maya your mom was an idiot when she slept with Hank, he is a drunken ass who never loved anyone. Have fun in the foster home"// A soft sob brought him back to the girl now crying on his couch. Michael walked over and put his arm around the petite girl. "Look Maya I'm really sorry, I don't know where Hank is. He was my foster dad but he was always going off and buying drinks with the money for the rent. He left Roswell about 8 months ago and I became emancipated so I could live on my own. Your better off with your mom's family, than with Hank anyway." Maya cried even harder at his last words. "My mom's family are all dead, I have no one now." Michael pulled her into a hug and let her cry.
"Michael!!! Hon its time to leave for school...." Maria poked her head in the front door and stopped. "Michael, honey bun would you like to try and explain this or do you just want me to stomp out and slam the door?" Michael pulled away from Maya who wiped her eyes and tried to pull her emotions under control. "Maria this is my sister Maya who is gonna live with me here." Michael said standing up and walking over to the door where Maya's suitcase sat. Maya stood up and said "Michael you don't have to do this I don't want your pity, we aren't even really related. Hank is not here and that's all I needed to know." Michael picked up her suitcase and carried it to the second bedroom with Maya following closely behind listing all the reasons it couldn't work. Maria smiled and sat down to enjoy the show.
Two long hours later "Number 143 I hate it when guys leave the toilet seat up so you would hate me 144 I hang my bras and thongs in the bathroom to dry 145 I turn into a werewolf every full moon..." Maria snickered from her seat on the couch. "Maya Hun you aren't gonna win, Michael is very stubborn. You could talk for hours and nothing would convince him." Michael looked over at Maria "Maria did you just call me stubborn?" Maria grinned and nodded her head. "Your gonna pay for that." Michael said jumping over the couch and gently knocking her to the floor. "Michael, Michael. No stop that's not fair" Maria yelled shrieking as he tickled her unmercifully. "Maya Help!!!!" she yelled at Maya. Maya giggled and climbed on top of Michael and began tickling him. He stopped tickling Maria and tried to reach Maya who had found his ticklish spot. Maria pulled herself from under him and helped Maya pin him to the ground. "Ok unfair advantage two against one. Stop I have to go to the bathroom." Michael cried until they stopped. They all laid there on the floor for a while before any of them said anything. "So will you stay?" Michael asked. "Yeah I'll stay." Maya replied in a tired but happy voice. Michael stood up and pulled Maya up with him. He gently steered her into her new bedroom and pulled the covers on the bed back and pushed her on the bed. He pulled the blanket around her and kissed her forehead. "Goodnight Sis" Maria watched from the door way as he quietly left her to rest. "Well I am surprised to say the least, you Mr. "Trust No one" are gonna share an apartment with someone you met 2 hours ago. I'm guessing your paranoia has lessened significantly or you finally lost it completely." Michael grinned at her and pulled her close. "Your still here." He said bending to kiss her. "You cant shake me space boy." she whispered as his lips covered hers
~The next day~
Maya hopped out of Maria's Jetta and looked around nervously. So this was it, West Roswell High. This was where she would spend 7 hours 5 days a week. She shivered out of nervousness, and felt an arm around her shoulder. "Don't worry Skye its not as scary as it looks, just tell anyone who bugs you that I'm your brother and you won't need to worry." Michael said with a laugh. Maria swatted him playfully and said "Maya we will all eat lunch at the quad at 12 so just look for us, if were not there then just find a table and we will meet you there OK?" Maria said in a sisterly tone. "Ok so I guess we had better get inside, it would look bad if I was late on my first day" Maya said trying to sound confident. Maria quickly pecked Michael on the cheek and squeezed Maya's arm. "Bye Cheesehead, Bye Maya Papaya.." She then hurried off to her first class, leaving Maya and Michael to themselves. Michael gently nudged her and said "Come on I'll walk you to your first class." They quickly made it to Maya's homeroom and she stood just outside clutching her books to her chest and looking at Michael. "Don't leave me Michael, please don't leave me!!" Michael smiled at her and looked in to the class. This was Alex and Liz's homeroom. Michael heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of them. "Skye you know I have to get to class. Don't worry two of my good friends are on this class, see them the girl with the long brown hair in the second row and the tall guy with the ears." He said gesturing to them. "If you have any trouble at all you tell them your my sister and they'll look out for you. We might have some classes together so you won't have to worry." He bent down and kissed her on the cheek. "I gotta go Hun see yaw." Michael smiled and walked down the hall and was soon out of sight. Maya sighed and patted her hair. Thank god Maria had helped her tame her otherwise frizzy curls, she had also lent her a cute outfit, so that she would look decent until that afternoon when they would go shopping for some clothes. She sighed and slowly opened the door to her new homeroom. The teacher looked up and smile at her. "Welcome you must be Amaya Andersen. You can set your stuff down on that seat by Liz and then come up here and tell us more about yourself. Liz can you raise your hand so she knows who you are." Maya looked at the girl and sighed with relief, it was the girl Michael had said was his friend. She walked over and set her stuff down and walked back to the front of the room. "Well my name is Amaya Skye Andersen, most people call me Maya or Kyla. I'm from Cortez, Colorado and I moved here to live with my brother. I don't believe in aliens and I am or was a waitress." She smiled and sat back down. There was this really cute guy in the back with brown hair and brown eyes who kept staring at her. She grinned to herself . Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Liz tapped her on the arm and smiled "Hi Maya I'm Liz Parker. She makes every new student introduce themselves like that, its kinda corny but she still does it every time." Maya smiled and said "I hate stuff like that, the last time I had to do that I was in like the 4th grade." Liz laughed and then turned to the front of the classroom. After class Liz took Maya's arm and steered her over to the boy named Alex. "Alex this is my new friend Maya. Be nice to her or I'll beat you up." Liz said grinning at Alex. "Me be rude to this beautiful young lady, surely you jest." Alex said with a grin. Maya blushed at the compliment and Liz punched Alex on the arm for embarrassing her. Alex wiggled his eyebrows and motioned towards the door, "Ladies first." Alex said in a comical English accent causing Liz and Maya to burst out laughing. Maya walked Liz to her locker and then headed for her own. She twirled in the combination but it wouldn't open. "Dammit open piece of crap!!" Maya said under her breathe. "Need some help?" Maya turned around and found herself face to face with the cute guy from her homeroom. She smiled at him and said "yeah that would be great, your in my homeroom right?" The boy smiled and nodded "I'm Kyle Valenti. Your Maya right?" Maya smiled and nodded her head. Kyle smiled and reached over and hit the locker and it opened. "Thank you so much. It would look really bad if I was late to class on my first day." Kyle smiled and said "Its no problem I had this locker last year and it can be difficult sometimes. What's your next class?" Maya pulled out her schedule and said "Gym and then English." Kyle smiled and said "Cool me to. Come on I'll walk you to your locker room. Maya smiled and linked her arm with his. "Well your in luck Maya, today were having a volley ball game boys vs. girls. Maybe I'll let you get a couple points against me, you know make you look good." Kyle said as they arrived outside the girls locker room. Maya laughed and said "A little over confident don't you think. What makes you think I need you to look good." "I know you don't need me to look good. "Kyle said looking her up and down causing her to blush. "How about we have a little bet. If my team wins you have to go on a date with me and if you win..." "If I win you have to be my slave for a week." Maya finished for him. Kyle smiled and shook her hand. Maya winked at him and entered the locker room. She quickly changed into her P.E. clothes and walked into the gym. The boys were already on there side of the net and the girls were getting in there positions. Liz waved at Maya from her position and Maria smiled at her from her seat on the benches. The coach came and reminded everyone of the rules and the game began. The guys served and Maya spiked it back over the net towards Kyle who missed it. Maya blew him a kiss and smiled. He raised a questioning eye brow. She smiled and waved to him. //Serves him right for assuming I couldn't play// she thought as she gracefully served the ball. An hour later Maya stood under the shower letting the warm water wash all the sweat from her body. //Hehehe Kyle was gonna hate being her slave, but he was the one who had suggested the bet.// she thought as she turned the water off and wrapped the towel around herself. She quickly dried her hair and got dressed. //She would make it up to him by going on a date with him. It's not like it would be a big punishment for her// She smiled and remembered the cocky grin on his face as he had proposed the bet. "Ooh Maya who ya thinkin' about" Liz said as she came up to Maya. "No one just thinking about shopping tonight." Maya said saying the first thing that had popped into her head. " Hey Liz I see you've met Michael's "sister"." Liz raised her eyebrows but said nothing. These Czechoslovakians were full of surprises. Maria smiled at Maya. "Right Maya Papaya your not thinking about anybody." Maria said winking at Maya. "Yeah well I am thinking about shopping and Liz and I have the same homeroom." Maya said defending herself. Maria and Liz exchanged a glance and Liz said "Ok so I guess we will see you at lunch time then." Maya picked up her backpack and said "Yeah ok see ya then." Maya grabbed her brush and ran it through her curls and then walked out into the crowded halls.
At lunch time Maya walked to the quad and finding no one there yet she found a table and spread her stuff out. "Hey Maya." Kyle said sitting down next to her. "Hey Kyle, tell me how does it feel to lose to a girl." She asked sweetly. Kyle growled and said "Well I would be pretty mad if it was any other girl but I have decided that I can handle losing to you and being your slave. In fact being your slave could be kinda interesting." Maya smiled and replied. "Well since you are handling this so maturely I have decided to indulge you. I will go on a date with you, but I'm not guaranteeing anything special." Kyle smiled and was about to reply when they were interrupted by a cold voice. " Skye is everything alright? Is he bothering you?" Maya looked up at Michael who looked like he was gonna burst. "Yeah everything is fine, you wanna sit down? Kyle this is my brother Michael" Michael glanced at Kyle suspiciously but sat down. "We've met." Kyle said stiffly. Maya noticed the look in both of there eyes and tried to ease the tension. "How has your day been so far?" Maya smiled at Michael. He took his eyes off Kyle and looked at her. His eyes softened and he replied. "My day has been really busy, I was worrying about you most of the day. How was your day Skye?" Maya smiled at him. He was the only one other than her mom who called her by her middle name. "My day has been really fun so far. I met Liz and Alex and there both great. Kyle helped me with my locker and he has been really helpful." She smiled at Kyle and he smiled back. Michael noticed and frowned but, nodded and pulled gently on one of her curls. "Im glad your day has been good so far. Tonight we have to get you some more outfits like that one. You look really pretty today. Did Maria do your hair this morning?" "Yeah she woke me up early and we worked on it together." Maya said smiling. "That's what you guys were doing, I thought one of you had drowned in there. Its hard enough to get ready in the morning when Maria stays the night, but with two women and one bathroom I'm lucky to get a shower at all." Michael said teasingly. Kyle tapped Maya on the shoulder and she turned around. "Hey I have to go where will you be after school?" Maya smiled and said. "I'm going shopping with Michael and Maria but not until later on so I'm not doing anything until they both get off work. If you wanna do something we can." Kyle smiled "Maybe I'll see you at the Crashdown later." Maya nodded and he smiled "See you later." he said and walked off. "Skye I want you to be careful of him ok. I don't like him or trust him." Maya smiled and said "You have'nt even known me for two days and already your being over protective. Look Michael I know you don't like him but I do and I want you to be nice to him." Michael smiled and said "I can't help it, I've never had a little sister before, I want you all to myself." Maya laughed and ruffled his already messy hair. They were interrupted by a tall dark haired boy and a slim blonde girl. "Hey Michael who this?" The blonde asked suspiciously. "This is Hank's daughter, Maya who is now going to be living with me. Skye this is Isabelle and Max Evans, my two best friends in the world." Isabelle looked at him oddly and sat down next to her. "Hey Maya, Its nice to meet you." Max nodded in agreement and looked across the quad where Liz, Alex, and Maria were walking towards there table. They walked over and sat down next to them. Alex sat down next to Isabelle and kissed her gently on the lips. Isabelle smiled at him and snuggled closer to him. Liz sat down next to Max and he put his arm around her and whispered something in her ear making her laugh. And Maria sat down on Michael's lap and kissed his cheek. Maya watched the couples around her and suddenly missed her mom very much. She felt her eyes fill with tears and she quickly got up and ran to the bathroom. Halfway there she bumped into something big and soft. She looked up through her tears at Kyle who was looking at her with concern. "Maya are you ok?" Kyle asked holding her up as her legs gave way. She felt herself lose control and collapse into his arms. He helped her into an empty classroom. She cried into his shirt and he held her .
The three couples had looked up as she had ran off. Michael stood up to go after her but Maria pulled him back down. "Let her be." she said gently. Isabelle looked at him and said quietly. "Since when do you have a sister?" Michael had glared at her and said "Since she showed up on my doorstep yesterday, alone and frightened. Isabelle she is Hank's daughter. Her mom had a one night stand with him. Her mom died from a car crash a week ago, and she came here hoping to find a home with a man she never knew. The sheriff told her to find me and I would tell her about her father. She showed up yesterday, exhausted from a 6 hour bus ride and I told her that she could live with me. I don't want her to be put in a foster home. She is a good person and I trust her." Max looked at his best friend "Michael how do you know she is a good person? And even if she is, what makes you think she is gonna want to live with an alien??" Michael took a deep breathe and shook his head. "Maxwell you took a risk and saved Liz. You knew she needed you, and you risked everything to take care of her. Maya needs me, and I need her. I always wanted a sister, even though I had Isabelle it wasn't the same. I need a family and so does she. I'm happy, for once I have everything I need. I have friends I can trust, friends that know about me and still are there. I have a girlfriend who I love with all my heart and who loves me with all of hers. And now I have a little sister, who needs me to protect her and be there for her. I don't know how everything will work out, and for once I'm willing to let things workout the way they're supposed to." Everyone sat silently for the next five minutes, and looked up when Kyle walked over with a now calm Maya. She had stopped crying after five minutes of him holding her, and he had coaxed her to go back with him promising he wouldn't leave her with the three happy couples. They sat down and looked up into the surprised faces of Michael, Maria, Liz, Max, Isabelle and Alex.
"Skye, are you ok?" Michael asked with concern at seeing her with Kyle's arm around her waist. "Yeah, I'm sorry if I scared any of you. I just saw all of you and felt so lonely and I missed Mom a lot, I had to get away and I just happened to run into Kyle who let me talk to him and cry. I'm ok now I just need Kyle to stay with me." Michael nodded and squeezed her hand. "Well Maya Papaya you had me worried. We might just have to skip 6th and 7th period and go somewhere less structured." Maya smiled and looked up at all of them. They all smiled and nodded there heads. "Yeah come on Maya it will be fun, besides you won't be missing much just art and study hall. We can all come and just veg for a while." Kyle said smiling at her. she smiled back and nodded her head. "I would like that a lot."
They ended up at the park and they managed to convince Maya to play hide-and-go-seek with them saying that it would do her good to laugh and play like a little kid. They declared Alex as the first person to be "it" and all went to there Hiding places. He counted to 50 and looked for his first victim. He was looking behind a large tree when he heard a giggle behind him. Isabelle was trying to quietly get to base but was being quite loud about it. Alex grinned wickedly and tackled her. She screeched and fell to the ground laughing as he tickled her. It was now her turn to be it and she found Kyle first. He ran as fast as he could but she was faster and she clobbered him. He got up rather sheepishly embarrassed that this was the second time that day he had been beaten by a girl. He counted to 50 as quickly as possible and began searching. He looked under the slide and behind the jungle gym and was close to giving up when he heard a creak behind him. Maya had been hiding behind a large barbecue grill had accidentally brushed against a swing as she made her way to base. He turned quickly and began running after her. She ran as fast as she could and would have easily made it to base except she slowed down and let him grab her. They both fell rolling to the ground. He laid on top of her for a few minutes looking into her eyes and then laughing pulled her up with him. They played for a few more minutes giving every body a chance to be it and then they all lay on the grass talking. They talked about the annoying new biology teacher, and how he spit when he talked. And Maya told them about her bet with Kyle and they all made plans for his week of slavery. And Kyle talked about his dad, and how he was so caught up in his world of aliens and ufo's that he hardly even noticed his son any more. He found himself talking openly about his private life about spending virtually every Christmas alone because of some new evidence that might prove that there was other life living on earth. Maya could her the pain in his voice as he talked about his grandfather and how his dad would probably end up the same. She squeezed his hand and he smiled sadly at her. He then realized that he had poured his soul out to the people he avoided at all costs. He cleared his throat uncomfortably. They all sat up and looked around trying to ease the tension, Maya smiled at them all and began. "I'm just glad that I found some people who could care about me even though they know virtually nothing about me. I know my mom would be happy knowing I had found such a caring group of people, that I wouldn't end up in a foster home. But now I think that Maria, Liz and Michael need to get to the Crashdown, so we should probably head over there." She stood up and brushed herself off and stretched her cramped muscles. Kyle watched her and then got up, not knowing what to say or do. The rest of them got up and headed to there cars. Maria, Michael, Maya and Kyle went in the Jetta and Liz, Max, Isabelle, and Alex went in the jeep. Within minutes they had pulled up in front of the Crashdown and they all unloaded. They chose the booth closest to the kitchen and slid in. Michael, Maria, and Liz went into the back to change into there work uniforms and the remaining 5 decided what they would eat. Liz walked back in her uniform to take there order. "Hello welcome to the Crashdown. What can I get you today?" Liz said trying not to giggle. Max smiled at her and said. "I just love the service here, do you have any of those cute little waitresses, I mean alien dolls?" Liz punched him in the arm and he tickled her side. Maya smiled and picked up the menu. "I think I'll have a Sigourney Weaver with a coke, oh and can you make sure you bring some Tabasco sauce with that." Maya said passing the menu to Kyle. Max, Isabelle, Liz and Alex looked at her oddly but didn't say anything. They all ordered and were soon eating. The tension soon disappeared as they all began to feel more relaxed around Kyle and soon Max, Kyle and Alex were talking about the upcoming super bowl. Maya grinned at Isabelle and rolled her eyes. Guys could be so exhausting. Maya got up and excused herself to the bathroom, but no one noticed but Isabelle. She stood in front of the mirror for a minute surveying herself. She had to admit the outfit Maria had lent her was perfect for her figure. The knitted tank top flattered her rather small chest and the black flares accentuated her small waist and long legs. Her hair actually looked decent, the curls were pulled up into a cute clip that Maria had given her as a type of welcome present. Maya pulled down curl and looked at it longingly thinking about the honey colored hair Isabelle had been blessed with. She looked at the curl and back at the mirror and screamed at what she saw. The curl that had been black moments before was now blonde. "Oh my god Oh my god. I've finally lost it I knew it would happen some day, but I was hoping to squeeze a few years of saneness out of life before it happened. God what do I do I can't just walk out there with different colored hair and expect no one to notice. I think I'm gonna hyperventilate. Breathe Maya you can do it in and out and in and out." Maya talked to her reflection trying to stay calm and figure out exactly what she had done to change her hair blonde. // Maybe it was the climate, it must be having weird effects on her brain. That was it she must be hallucinating// She reasoned with herself. She closed her eyes and wished it back to normal but was very dissapointed and more then a little freaked when her hair remained blonde. She grabbed her hair and willed it to turn back and to her surprise it did. She dropped the curl and backed away from the mirror. "Ok this can't be a good thing, Michael and the others would freak if they found out. God what am I?" Maya whispered to her reflection wishing her mom was there to tell her what was happening. She remembered a time before this when she had healed a cut in her dogs paw and her mom had told her she was special. Just how special was she? How could all of this be? She walked into one of the stalls and put the toilet cover down and sat to think. She put her head in her hands and cried. She heard the door open and she heard Isabelle's concerned voice. "Maya are you ok? You've been in there for like 20 minutes. Do you need me to get Michael?" Maya came out of the bathroom and looked down at the ground. "No I'm fine I just felt kinda tired and I didn't want Kyle or Michael to worry." Isabelle eyed her carefully not sure if she was telling her the truth. She seemed kind of distracted. Maya looked up and smiled her old smile. "I swear Iz, I'm fine now. I just felt kinda gross and I didn't want Kyle and Michael to get into a fight over who would carry me home to bed." Isabelle smiled at her last words and laughed. "I know how you feel, Max and Michael sometimes act like they can run my life. Always telling me who to trust and who not to trust. Alex is like the only one who lets me make my own decisions." Isabelle smiled at the thought of the tall sweet boy. Maya caught her smile and laughed "You guys don't seem like you would be a couple, how did you end up with him?" Maya asked shyly. Isabelle smiled at the memory of there first kiss. "Alex was always that boy who no one noticed. And I was always the girl every guy wanted but could never have. I guess the reason we ended up together was that he understood me. He saw that I was scared to show anyone my real self and he told me that I could show him. He told me that he knew that beneath my beautiful exterior was an even more beautiful interior. He never pushed me to do anything I was afraid of. We were friends at the beginning and he was the one I always thought of when I was in trouble or scared. He protected me from things that he knew would hurt me. Well one day about 6 months ago I realized that the thing I had been searching for was right in front of me the whole time, waiting patiently for me to wisen up and realize it." Isabelle blushed and stopped embarrassed for talking so candidly about Alex with Maya. Maya smiled and nodded for her to continue. "I was in the cafeteria with Alex and the others and I looked across the table and saw him for the first time. I saw how he had loved me from a distance since the third grade. I saw how even when I had told him to leave me alone, he had watched over me. And I stood up in front of the entire school and kissed him. They all cheered and whistled according to Liz and Maria but I was to caught up in the moment to notice. We have been together ever since." Isabelle smiled and looked at Maya. "So how did you know with Kyle." Isabelle asked slyly. Maya's head snapped up and she turned red. "Is it that obvious?" Isabelle laughed and nodded. "Well I guess I knew when he helped me with my locker. He was so sweet and he looked at me like, like." "Like you were the only girl on earth." Isabelle finished for her. Maya nodded and turned to Isabelle. "Iz do you mind if I ask you something." Isabelle shook her head yes. "Why are you all so guarded against Kyle? When Michael came up to me at lunch today he looked like he was gonna kill Kyle." Isabelle sighed and looked at Maya. She was obviously lonely, but Isabelle could tell that her feelings for Kyle were sincere. She took a deep breathe. "Well Maya Kyle dated Liz before she met Max. When she broke up with Kyle he had a hard time dealing, and he got Max drunk and lots of bad stuff happened that I cant even began to tell you about." Maya nodded in understanding. They were interrupted by Maria who came running in at that moment. "Maya get your ass back out there Michael is completely gonna kill Kyle." Maya and Isabelle ran after Maria back to the booth where Michael and Kyle were standing face to face. Maya gasped and they looked at her. Michael frowned and said "Maya stay out of this. He asked for it and now he's gonna get it." Kyle scowled at Michael and said "Don't order her around like that she's a big girl she can make her own decision." Michael stepped closer to Kyle so that they were an inch from bumping noses. Maria, Liz, Isabelle and Alex stood there gaping. Max looked like he wanted to stop Michael but like he also wanted Kyle to get pummeled. They were all surprised when a loud whistle interrupted Michael and Kyle from killing each other. Everyone looked at Maya and were surprised to see fire in her eyes. "Ok firstly Michael, you may be my brother but like Kyle said I am a big girl and if I wanna get involve then I will! Secondly you to will get over this stupid little testosterone war thing that you've got going or you will both experience hell. Thirdly Michael I like Kyle and I won't have you hating him or threatening to beat the shit out of him if anything happens between us." Kyle smirked triumphantly at Michael. Maya noticed and glared at him. "Lastly, Kyle you aren't gonna get away with anything if you don't do your part to patch up this hate war. I refuse to have two people I care about hating each other. So either you both shake hands and agree to be friends or at least act civil towards each other or I'm gonna make you wish you were burning in the pits of hell." No one said anything but then one of the few customers who had stopped eating to watch the so called fight started clapping. Soon the room was loud with clapping and whistling. Maya blushed at the attention and turned to hide in the bathroom but was stopped by Jeff Parker who patted her on the shoulder. "May I introduce everyone to my new assistant manager Maya." The cheering and clapping got louder at this. Maria and Liz started screaming and hugging her and Michael smiled an uncertain smile. Maya looked up at her new boss and said "When do I start?" Jeff smiled at her. He liked this girl, if she could handle Michael Guerin then he was sure she could handle anything. "Tomorrow, just come home with Liz and Maria. What size do you wear?" Maya gulped and looked at the uniforms Maria and Liz were wearing. Liz laughed and said cheerfully. "Maya you won't get out of it, I'm his daughter and look at me." Maya laughed and replied. "I wear a size 6, I was just wondering if I have to wear the antennas?" Jeff smiled at her and Liz and Maria giggled. "Of course not Maya we wouldn't make you wear just any antennas." Maya groaned and Jeff went back to the storage room and appeared a few minutes later with a weird object in his hands. Maya looked at it and realized what it was. "Oh no there is no way I'm wearing that. N-O NO." Jeff brought the object closer and Maya backed farther away until she bumped into Kyle. "Kyle if you know what's good for you, you'll move out of my way." Maya said desperately trying to sound mean. Kyle smiled at her and shook his head no. Jeff pulled out the antennas and place them on her head. The antennae was just like Maria and Liz's except for one major difference. A little sign on the front of hers declared her to be "Head Alien" Maya moaned and looked at Maria and Liz pleadingly. Maria smiled sympathetically. "Maya I hate to tell you this but it gets worse." Liz said smiling. Jeff walked over and put his hand on a little button on her antennae. He flicked a switch and the words on the little sign lighted up. Maya groaned even louder. "Courtesy of Maria's mom and technology." Kyle whispered in her ear. Jeff smiled and said "Its worth the embarrassment, you get paid way more than Liz and Maria do." Liz and Maria laughed at the look on Maya's face. Jeff smiled at her and called to everyone, "Dinks on the house for everyone." There was one last applause and then the Crashdown went back to its old routine. Maya slid tiredly into her booth and Kyle sat down next to her. "Maya if you want we could do something tomorrow, you seem kinda tired. I could take you home, if you want. That way you'll be able to go shopping still." Kyle looked down at Maya waiting for her reply. But the tired brunette girl had fallen asleep on his shoulder. Kyle smiled at her and put his arm around her. There was something about that girl, something pure and untouched. Something he had never seen before. He felt drawn to her. That day when she had started crying he had felt a piercing in his chest and he knew he had to go back. Less then five minutes later he was holding her close and comforting her. It was almost like they were linked, but that was impossible. Was'nt it? Kyle shook his head and stared down at one curl that had fallen across her eyes. He brushed it away and smiled. He was hooked, he thought laughing to himself. This was it that thing Liz and Max had. It was almost like he could see his future their future together. He smiled to himself and was surprised at the calmness, he felt he hadn't felt that happy since before his mom left. Alex and Isabelle slid into the seat across from Kyle and Maya. Isabelle smiled at the goofy smile on Kyle's face. But her smile turned to a frown at the sight of Michael looking out the window in the back room. He looked like someone was gonna die and Isabelle was pretty sure who. "Maria." Isabelle called to the pixie waitress who was serving a family of four. Maria looked up and Isabelle pointed to the back room. Maria sighed and rolled her eyes before wiping her hands on her alien apron and walking to the back. Michael moved back from the small window and acted like he had been doing inventory. Maria walked over and slid her arms around his waist. "Come on Cheesehead, tell me what's wrong." she said moving one hand up to ruffle his hair. "God Maria you know he's gonna hurt her, maybe not on purpose but she is gonna get hurt. I mean his dad is the man we have had to hide from forever." Michael slumped onto the couch and put his head in his hands. " Oh sweetie do you remember when you and I had that fight and you kept saying that you had to be alone that you couldn't have any distractions. I was so hurt. I cried my eyes out for two days, but I had known from the beginning that I was in risk of being hurt by you, I made the decision. Maya has to decide what she wants. Whether or not she wants to risk getting hurt for someone she obviously likes a lot. We don't get involve unless she needs us." Maria said crawling onto his lap and lifting his head until he was looking her in the eye. He had such incredible eyes. They lit up only for her. "Its gonna be alright Michael. He wont hurt her at any cost. I can tell. He loves her like you love me and like Max and Alex love Liz and Isabelle. He loves her like your parents loved each other, like they loved you and Max and Isabelle. He loves her like I love you." he smiled at her and she bent and kissed him softly on the lips. "Ok Boogerbrain I trust you." He said smiling at her. She bent in for another kiss.
Max sat watching Liz, she was so beautiful. She had always been beautiful, she had the sweetest expressions. Max smiled and thought about the future. He thought about the future a lot. He would go to college and become a pediatrician, marry Liz and have 3 sweet quiet children with her. He wasn't sure about that last part but he knew that the first two would happen. Liz looked over at him and smiled. Max smiled back and thought to her. //I love you Liz// Max smiled at the reply he got. //I love you more.// He and Liz had a link, a bond . It happened the day of the shooting when Max had touched her stomach, they had given each other a part of themselves. They could talk to each other through there thoughts.// What are you thinking about, Max?// He heard Liz's voice in his head. //You. Like normal.// Liz smiled at him and sent him a virtual kiss. Max winked at her and went into the back room. A few minutes later she came through the doors and into his arms. He held her and listened to her soft breathing. "Your my world, Liz" he whispered in her ear. Liz looked up at him and smiled, "And your mine." She whispered pressing her lips firmly to his.
Maya yawned and rolled over in Kyle's arms. She slowly opened her eyes and looked around. Kyle had fallen asleep holding her and she had to untangle herself from his arms. She smiled at his sleeping form and planted a soft kiss on his head. He smiled in his sleep and she stood and looked around. The Crashdown was almost empty except for an old man banging his spoon on his coffee cup and yelling for some more coffee. Maya looked around confused. Where in the world were Maria, Liz, and Michael? Maya looked back at her booth and realized that Max was no longer sitting across from Kyle. Maya narrowed her eyes and walked into the back room. There were Liz and Max making out like there was no tomorrow. "Ahem!!! Liz don't you have work to do?" Maya asked trying not to look at there guilty faces as they pulled apart. Max's shirt was half way unbuttoned and Liz's hair was all over the place. Liz smiled sheepishly at Maya and shrugged. Max was turning a bright red and looking at the ground. Maya smiled and pointed towards the front. "Liz I think you have work to do. Max you need to behave or you'll have to leave, I can't have people distracting the waitresses." Max looked at the ground until Liz pulled him out into the restaurant. Maya rolled her eyes and headed towards the bathroom. She passed Michael and Maria who were doing inventory and walked into the bathroom locking the door behind her. //I did it once maybe I can do it again.// She thought to herself picking up a single curl. She willed it to be gold and it changed instantly. "Ok so we know that's not normal." Maya said to herself. // OK be logical what could this mean.// Maya rolled her eyes. // right logical be serious I have no idea what this means// For the third time that day her eyes welled up and she slid to the floor. //Who am I kidding. Michael is not gonna want to live with a freak. Kyle couldn't possibly love a freak.// Maya laid down on the floor and cried. She couldn't stay here, not now she wasn't normal. She didn't know what else to do but go home and get her stuff. Home. She didn't have a home any more. She had no one. She wouldn't be able to say good bye to any of them, they would ask questions. They would try and convince her to stay. She could'nt stay no matter what. She didn't know what else she could do with her "powers". She didn't want to be responsible for any one getting hurt. Maya wiped her eyes and stood up. She would have to get her stuff before Michael and Maria got off of work. She could fake a head ache and be gone before they got home. She walked out to the restaurant and tapped Michael on the shoulder. "Umm Michael, I have a really bad headache. So I'm gonna go back to the apartment and sleep so that I can still go shopping." Michael nodded and looked concerned. "Skye you don't look so good. If you want I could leave early, and take you home." Maya shook her head no. "Michael I'm fine except for this head ache. I'm just gonna go home and rest ok." Michael frowned and nodded. Something was up, she would'nt look him in the eye. Maya grabbed him and hugged him hard. "Hey Skye I'll be home in like a few hours, we aren't being separated or anything." Michael said pulling her gently off of him. Maya looked at the ground and nodded. Michael watched her hug Liz, Maria, Max, Isabelle and Alex good bye. Maria looked at him and he shrugged. He watched her go over to Kyle and sit down next to him. She stroked his cheek and lightly kissed him on the lips, "Kyle I have to go. I love you and I'm sorry." She whispered in his ear. She felt the tears well up and she ran out of the Crashdown.
Michael's Place
It had taken Maya a good half hour to walk home and she found herself wishing she hadn't sold her mothers car. She walked over to the small stereo and tuned into the local radio station. Dido's Here with Me filtered in and Maya turned it up. "Oh I am What I am I'll do what I want but I cant hide. And I wont go and I wont sleep and I cant breathe until your resting here with me..."Maya hummed along with the music and walked back to Michael's room. She grabbed the picture on his table and looked at it. It was everyone, except Kyle sitting in a booth at the Crashdown. Michael was wearing a birthday hat and was smiling broadly at the camera. Maya choked back the tears and grabbed a sheet of paper off his desk. 20 minutes later she folded the letter and walked into her room. She grabbed her suitcase which hadn't been unpacked and set the letter on her bed. She lugged the suitcase out to the living room and picked up the phone book.
Kyle opened the door and heard Maya's soft voice. "Hi I need to buy a ticket for the next bus out of Roswell. No any where far from here will be fine. 13.50 ok half an hour alright thank you very much" Maya hung up and turned to grab her suitcase. She saw Kyle and she felt her heart sink. "Maya where are you going?" Kyle asked confused. "Look Kyle I cant stay here, please don't ask any questions ok just go and leave me alone." Maya said trying to get passed him to the door. "Why cant you stay?" Kyle asked stepping in front of the door. "Dammit Kyle I'm different, ok in a really bad way. Staying here would put you in danger." Maya said angrily trying not to cry. "Maya you cant just up and leave. How are you different, maybe I can help. Please Maya let me try and help. Don't push me away." Kyle said trying to take her in his arms. Maya pulled back and glared at him. She opened her mouth to tell him off but was silenced by his lips. She pushed weakly against his chest wrestling with her feelings for him. She felt herself give in to his kiss and all thoughts of leaving left her brain. He gently released her and looked into her eyes. "Maya how are you different?" He asked gently. Maya looked into his eyes and took a deep breathe, "I can change things by touching them." Kyle looked confused so she picked up a curl and for the third time that day turned it blonde. Kyle blinked but didn't move away from her. Maya looked at him and smiled slowly. "You didn't leave. You didn't run screaming from the room." Kyle smiled and sat down on the couch patting the seat next to him. "Maya the minute you walked into class this morning I was yours. You can't get rid of me that easily. Does Michael know, does any one know?" Maya shook her head and leaned her head on his shoulder. "Your the only one that knows I'm different." Kyle smiled at her and lightly kissed her. He had only known her a day but it felt as if they had spent years together. She needed him and it felt so good to be needed. He had only been 10 when his mom had left him and his father. She had left him with a broken father and nothing else. She hadn't needed him then and he knew she didn't need him or want him now. And his father needed him but was to big of a "man" to admit it. Maya laid there not knowing exactly what had happened, he was still here. He said he wasn't going to leave her. Maya smiled at him and laid down on the couch. He laid beside her, and soon the the only sound in the room was of two people sleeping.
Michael got out of Maria's car and walked up the stairs to his apartment. He pulled out his keys and was surprised to find the door open. He walked in and looked around, and stopped when he saw Kyle and Maya lying on the couch sleeping in each others arms. Michael felt his heart fill with rage and jealousy. He had finally completed his family and now this ass hole was gonna take her away. He would burn in hell before he let Kyle have Skye.
Maria opened the door and saw Michael. She saw the rigid line of his shoulders and looked where he was glaring. Kyle and Maya were lying in each others arms on the couch. She grabbed his shoulder and pulled him out to the small balcony. Michael glared at Kyle and clenched his teeth. Maria pulled his head so that he was looking into her eyes and said quietly "Michael what is so wrong with your little sister being as happy as you and I are?" Michael turned and looked at her with tears glistening in his brown eyes. "Maria, I don't want to share her with him. I finally found the missing piece of my family and now he is gonna take her from me with out even trying. Hank left her just like he left me. I need her and I want her to be mine alone." Maria smiled and brushed away a tear that had fallen down his cheek. No matter how he tried to hide it he was still that scared little boy who could'nt understand why he was here, or why he wasn't good enough to have love. She had fixed a lot of the hurt that his bastard of a father had caused, but there were still times when the pain resurfaced. Having Maya know how he felt made her so important, Maria knew that was one of the reasons he had made her stay. No matter how much he told himself she had needed him most, Maria knew that he needed Maya more. "Michael I know you want her to be yours and not have to share with anyone else. But that's kind of selfish, don't you think. I mean how many girls do you need to have to yourself to be happy. You have me all to yourself almost every night and every hour of every day of every week, forever. Even when I'm not with you I think about you and there is no way I could ever love any body the way I love you." Michael looked at her with a confused look on his face. "Maria why do you Love me? I could understand if I wasn't an alien and a orphan who nobody cared about. Why did you give up a wonderful life to be with me?" Maria felt her eyes well up with tears. How could he think of himself this way? But then she remembered the fight she had heard when she had gone over to his trailer one night. She shuddered at the memory. Hank had been very drunk, he had been yelling at Michael and calling him a worthless little shit, and saying that he was'nt surprised that his parents had left him on the side of the road to die, that no one would ever want to love a bastard like him. She had stood outside the trailer, crying for him. He had come running out and she had stopped him. He had pulled away from her and been angry that she had come over so late, he had been worried about the group of boys who circulated the trailer park. They liked to pick one girl and have there way with her. He had insisted that he go with her to her house, even though it would mean a long walk home for him. She had sat next to him thinking how he must be hurting from his fathers cruel words. He had acted like it was no big thing and that it was ok. He had seemed surprised that she could care about him. She had invited him to stay the night as her friend and he had refused not wanting to get her into any trouble. She told him if he ever needed a place to stay he could always come to her. He had shown up two nights later, cold and wet from the rain and even though she had not wanted to let him in for fear of losing control she had. He had cried on her bed that night and she had comforted him. He was better now but sometimes that little boy lost control and he couldn't keep himself from falling. "Michael I love you because you are always there, helping me protecting me making me laugh. You are an amazing person. I wouldn't be who I am with out you. I need you Michael, I can't imagine my life without you. I know that you have had it rough in the past but things are different now, you don't have to worry any more." She smiled and kissed him lightly on the cheek. He smiled at her and wiped his eyes. They walked back inside and Maria woke Maya and Kyle from there peaceful sleep. Maya stretched out her long legs and she sat up. Kyle held her tightly around her waist making it really hard to sit up, but she untangled herself and stood up. Michael was smiling at her and Maria winked making her blush. She turned and gently woke up Kyle, who sat up and smiled at her sleepily, his hair going in all directions. Surprisingly it resembled Michael's hair a lot. She smiled and kissed him on the cheek before going into the bathroom to check her hair and outfit before they went shopping. Her hair was still dark brown thank god, and even though she had slept on it twice it had held up and looked just as it had 4 hours earlier. Her top had slipped up a little while she was sleeping but her outfit was fine. She felt happy again she observed, Kyle knew she was different and he had stayed. She smiled at her reflection and playfully changed her eye color to a light violet. She laughed and turned it back to blue, and walked back out to the living room where her three friends waited for her. Maya walked over to the couch and stood behind it watching her brother and Kyle with interest. Kyle was talking about some of the alien stuff his father had stored in there attic and Michael was very interested in it. Kyle was busy describing this odd amulet his grandfather had found at this site in the desert 40 years ago, when he saw Maya and stopped. She was so beautiful and happy, he loved her so much already. He couldn't wait to spend more time with her, learn more about how she was special. Michael stood up and pulled Maria out of the bean bag chair. "So you guys ready to shop?" Michael asked Maya and Kyle. Kyle seemed shocked at first and assumed Maya had asked Michael and Maria if they minded that he joined them but, he saw the look on Maya's face and knew she hadn't known a thing about it. He looked up at Michael and was surprised to see him smiling at them. Kyle stood up and smiled at Maya. "I'm ready how about you?" She smiled and nodded taking his hand and they followed Maria and Michael out the door.
Two hours later Michael and Kyle were collapsed on a bench surrounded by dozens of bags, while Maria and Maya looked at hand knit sweaters. They had gone to tons of stores and the girls still had tons of energy. Michael and Kyle had followed them tolerantly for the first two hours, but then there feet had begun to numb and there toes had started tingly. They now could'nt feel there legs and they had begun to have muscle spasms. Maria and Maya walked out of the store with a few more bags each and pulled Michael and Kyle up. Then with the boys carrying all but four bags they headed towards the car. They stopped at Kyle's house first and he climbed out of the car slowly, cursing shoes and malls. Maya laughed as he tried to stand but couldn't, she got out of the car and helped him to the door. She helped him inside and set down with him on the couch. He flopped down on the couch and she pulled his shoes off. She softly pressed her hands to his feet, massaging them, healing them. He smiled as a warm tingle went through his feet and they no longer hurt. She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "There now your healed." Maya said happily. Michael smiled and stroked her cheek. How could he have ended up with such a wonderful girl like her. He leaned in and tenderly kissed her. She pulled back at the sound of Maria honking the horn and grinned at him. "See ya tomorrow?" "I'll be at your locker first thing. "Kyle replied grinning. Maya gave him one last kiss and walked out to the car.
Twenty minutes later she was in her room, unpacking her stuff for good. As arranged her new clothes in the old dresser that Maria's mom had given to Michael she thought. //She had never been involved this deeply with anyone this quickly, of course she had never felt this way about anyone after knowing them for only a day.// She closed her now empty suitcase and slid it under her bed. Her body ached and she couldn't stay awake much longer. She crawled between the crisp sheets and fell asleep smiling. Tomorrow was the beginning of everything, and she was happy.
