1. Different People Have Different Motives for Follow-

ing Jesus .

a. Many People like Matthew have Heard the Voice of

the Shepherd & are Simply Obeying the Call with No

Agenda of their Own.

b. Many People like the Multitude in John 6 are

Following Jesus Primarily for the Earthly Material

Benefits.

John 6:26-27 -- The Prosperity Gospel

c. Many People Today are Looking for a Sideshow sort

of thing -- a Christian Carnival -- to Attend in Jesus'

Name.

John 6:1-2 -- Modern Day " Healing " Crusades

d. Other People like Judas See Following Jesus as a

Means of Padding their Own Pocket-book or Further-

ing their Own Causes.

John 12:4-6 & Matthew 26:14-16

1.) Money " Grubbing " Preachers

2.) " Rev. " Politicians

2. Many People Turn their Backs on the Lord & Walk

Away when they Hear Something they Don't Like --

Something that is Hard from His Word.

John 6:60 & 66

3. The True Follower of Jesus Christ Cannot Walk

Away from the Lord & His People.

John 6:67-69 c/f I John 2:19

4. The Questions for us Today are :

a. Why Do I Follow Jesus ?

b. Can I Walk Away from the Lord & His People ?

B. The Soulwinning Zeal of a New Convert to Acquaint

his " Cronies " with Jesus -- to Reach his Friends for

Christ

Verse 10 c/f Luke 5:27-29

1. A Promise Fulfilled & a Principle Established

Matthew 4:18-19 -- Follow Me & I Will Make You ...

2. A Question Arises :

*** Do I Have a Holy Passion to Reach Men for Jesus ?

3. A Conclusion is Reached :

*** If We Don't Have a Holy Passion to Reach People

for Jesus, we're Not Following Him Close Enough !

C. The Critics' Complaint

Verse 11

1. The Critics Never Understand , and we Have them

Still Today.

2. The Critic's Complaint is the Disciple's Delight .

*** I am Continually Amazed at How One Sermon can

Cause the Soul of One Man to Wither Away, while

at the Exact Same Time Another Man is Nourished

& Strengthened Spiritually by the Same Message.

3. One Old Preacher Used to Say : " If the Sermon Rubs

you the Wrong Way, then, Try Turning Around."

4. Illustration : My Mother's Testimony about My Preach-

ing on Faithful Church Attendance.

D. The Lord's Response with an Explanation of His

Calling

Verses 12-13

1. He Points Out that they had Completely Missed the

Boat as far as Understanding the Heart of God was

Concerned.

Verse 12

a. God's Desire was NOT to be Standoffish with Man

as the " Holier than thou " Pharisees were.

b. His Desire was to Bring Spiritual Healing to Sin Sick

Souls.

2. He Tells them that the Key to Understanding the

Heart of God with regard to His Dealings with Man

May be Found in a Discovery of what He Meant by

His Statement in Hosea 6:6 .

Verse 13a

*** The Purpose of the Old Testament Law was Not to

Merely Set Up a Sacrificial System of Religion but to

Outline the Means by which a Holy God might Dem-

onstrate His Mercy toward Sinful Men & Ultimately

Point them to their Need of a Savior who would Be-

come their Sacrifice for Sin.

Galatians 3:24 ; Romans 6:23 ; John 1:29 ; Heb-

rews 10:1-18 ; Colossians 2:14 ; & Hebrews 53:10

3. He Explains His Purpose for Coming & the Calling

He Was & IS Extending to Men.

Verse 13b

a. Negatively -- He is NOT Calling Righteous

People to Come As they Are to Him As Though they

are Worthy.

b. Positively -- He IS Calling Sinners to Come to

Him through Repentance As Though they Have No

Hope but that God will be Merciful to them Through

Jesus.

4. The Thing that Keeps Many People from Being

Saved is that They are Too Proud to Admit that

they Need God's Mercy ; they would Rather Trust in

their Own Integrity than they would to Humble

themselves & Acknowledge their Need of a Savior .

III. The King's New Dispensation Explained

9:14-17

A. The Question of John the Baptist's Disciples regard-

ing Fasting .

Verse 14

B. The Answers of the Master

Verses 15-17

1. He Answers the Question about Fasting .

Verse 15

*** Fasting is Important, but the Time for it would be later

when He was No Longer With them.

2. He Explains the Introduction of a New Dispensa-

tion in God's Dealings with Man.

Verses 16-17

a. The Basic Teachings of the Passage

1.) Jesus Did Not Come to " Patch Up " the Old Tes-

tament Religious System.

2.) Jesus Came to " Start Over " with Entirely New

Materials.

3.) The Difference in His Approach & the Conduct of

His Disciples is Merely a Reflection of the Fact

that a New Dispensation was Beginning, & God

was Doing a New Work in their Midst.

b. The Irreconcilability of the Two Covenants

Verses 16-17

*** They Cannot be Integrated into One -- though

they are Similar in Many Ways.

1.) No Man Puts New Cloth on an Old Garment

2.) No Man Puts New Wine into Old Bottles

c. The Changing Nature of the Two Covenants

1.) The New Covenant Comes Into the Spotlight &

is Activated at the Death of Jesus by the Offering

of His Blood -- Just Like the Old Covenant had

become Activated by the Blood of an Animal

Sacrifice.

Hebrews 9:14-24

2.) The Old Covenant is Deactivated by theSacrifice

of Jesus, & It Steps Back Into the Shadows

where it Belongs as a Museum Piece which Re-

mains as a Testimony to an Age Gone By & a

Shadow of Things to Come.

Hebrews 10:1-9

d. The Symbolism of the Two Covenants (OT & NT)

1.) New Cloth -- Old Garment ( V-16 )

2.) New Wine -- Old Wine ( Implied in V-17 )

3.) New Bottles -- Old Bottles ( V-17 )

e. The Typology of the Two Covenants

Verses 16-17 c/f Matthew 26:17-29

1.) Two Elements of the Passover & the Lord's Sup-

per which are Defined by the Lord as Being

Representative of Specific Things :

a.) Unleavened Bread -- Represents the

Lord's Broken Body ,

b.) Unfermented Fruit of the Vine (Grape Juice)-

Represents the Shed Blood of Jesus Christ.

2.) Cloth and Garment -- A Type of the Cover-

ings Provided by the 2 Covenants - Ultimately

Pointing to the Broken Body of Jesus Christ.

Exodus 26 c/f Hebrews10:14-22 & I Corinth-

ians 11:23-26

3.) Wine -- a Type of the Blood that was Shed to

Establish the 2 Covenants -- Ultimately Point-

ing to the Blood of Jesus Christ.

a.) The Word Wine in the Bible is a Generic

Term which Refers to the Fruit of the Vine &

is Often Speaking of Unfermented Grape

Juice -- Depending on the Context.

John 2:1-11 c/f Habakkuk 2:15-16

b.) The Cup, the Fruit of the Vine, Unfermented

Grape Juice is a Type of the Blood of Jesus

Christ in the Last Supper.

I Corinthians 11:23-33 & I Peter 1:18-19

4.) Wine Bottles -- a Type of the Messengers,

the Carriers, or the Containers that Received

the 2 Covenants.

Exodus 12:1-27 c/f I Corinthians 11:23-26 &

3. The Superiority of the New Dispensation to the

Old One & the New Covenant to the Old Covenant

a. The Covering of the New Testament is Perma-

nent , whereas the Covering of the Old Testa-

ment was Only Temporary.

b. The Wine of the New Testament Provides a

Permanent Cleansing for Sin , whereas the

Old Testament Wine Provided Only a Partial &

Temporary Cleansing from Sin.

c. The New Winebottles of the New Testament

are carrying a New Wine which the Old Wine

Bottles of the Old Testament Could Not Contain.

A. His Power was Displayed Over Man's Ailments .
