Title: " The Higher Principles of Kingdom Living "
Text: Matthew Chapters Five through Seven
INTRO: 1. The Next 3 Chapters in our Study Comprise a
Sermon that Jesus Preached in the Earliest Days of
His Ministry.
2. This Sermon is Often Referred to as the Sermon
on the Mount , because He Preached it to His
Disciples while they were All Seated Together with
Him on the Side of a Mountain.
3. In this Sermon the Lord Jesus Reveals the Higher
Principles of Kingdom Living .
4. The Principles of Kingdom Living are Higher than :
a. Man's Own Natural Principles
Isaiah 55:8-9
b. God's Old Testament Law Principles
Matthew 5:27-28
c. Most People -- Even Professing Christians -- are
Willing to Embrace & Submit to .
5. Nevertheless, We'll All be Judged By these
Principles whether we Like it or Not, because God
Has Spoken.
John 12:48

CHAPTER 5
I. The Setting of the Sermon
Matt. 5:1-2
II. A Blessing Pronounced
Matt. 5:3-12
A. These are Usually Referred to as the Beattitudes -- or
the Beautiful Attitudes.
B. There are Eight Specific Kinds of People that the King
Pronounces His Blessing Upon in this Passage.
1. The Poor In Spirit
Verse 3 -- Theirs Is the Kingdom.
2. Those that Mourn
Verse 4 -- They Shall Be Comforted.
3. Those that are Meek
Verse 5 -- They Shall Inherit the Earth.
4. Those that Hunger & Thirst for Righteousness
Verse 6 -- They Shall Be Filled.
5. Those that are Merciful
Verse 7 -- They Shall Obtain Mercy.
6. Those that are Pure in Heart
Verse 8 -- They Shall See God.
7. Those that are Peacemakers
Verse 9 -- They'll be Called the Children of God.
8. Those that are Persecuted for Christ & Righteous-
ness
Verses 10-12
a. Theirs is the Kingdom.
b. Their Reward is Great in Heaven.
c. They're In Great Company -- with the Prophets.
III. The Believer's Ministry & Responsibility
5:13-16
A. The Believers Have a Ministry of :
1. Salt -- Verse 13
a. Prevents Spoilage -- Acts as a Preservative
b. Bites & Stings When it Comes Into Contact with a
Wound
c. Brings Healing to a Wound
d. Adds Flavor
e. Creates Thirst
2. Light -- Verse 14
a. Dispels Darkness
b. Gives Direction by Illumination
c. Gives Comfort to the Fearful
d. Gives Security Against the Dangers of Darkness
B. The Believers Have a Responsibility to :
1. Stay Salty -- Not Lose Our Savour

2. Join Our Lights Together & Display them Prominently
that Men May Be Enlightened & God Glorified

a. Join Our Lights Together
1.) A City Set On a Hill -- A Group of Lights
Shining Together
Verse 14
2.) Men Light a Candle, and Put it ... On a Candle-
stick
Verse 15
a.) The Spirit of a Man Is the Candle of the
of the Lord.

b.) When a Man Gets Saved, He is Born Again
Spiritually & Receives the Life & Light of Je-
sus Christ Into His Renewed Spirit.

with the Light of the World, & he Becomes
the Light of the World as a Child of Light.

IV. A New Concept for Righteousness Revealed

A. The Law is Not to Be Destroyed but Fulfilled .

C. The Standard for Righteousness is Higher than the
Conduct of the Scribes & Pharisees.
