LAST WEEK We had a bit of a practise on Saturday. Since we had not done anything at all since our evening at the Old Colonial, we thought it might be a little dicy. But we played well enough; the vermin in the dank, dark rehearsal room seemed to think so, at any rate. We then headed out to see Dan Warner and Kev Garrant at the Corner. The evening started with Jerome Smith. This guy had a great blues voice, for which he duly thanked Philip Morris (more or less). Then came the Loveslaps, who were at times reminiscent of a grungy rockabilly band. Finally, Dan and Kev and their band hit the stage. And surprise, surpise, who should be playing bass but Jerome Smith! He had exchanged his 5-gallon hat for a bandana and shed 15 years in the process. For those of you who don't know of Dan and Kev's music, I suppose you could describe it as folk-rock, but that's only a rough approximation. Anyway, they were very good & a splendid time was had by all (not a particularly prosaic description, but an accurate one). NEXT WEEK Next Wednesday evening, we play a few songs at a song competition at the Esplanade. More on this next time... THE 288 SUGAR PACKETS No word yet... we're praying that they are OK. PETE'S MUM It has come to light that Pete's mum recorded the first half of our appearance at the Old Colonial on her digital videocam-thingy. Sam and Pete have seen it, and swore to me on five bibles that it is very good. As a result, they sent her into hiding lest some of the more desperate bootleggers track down the precious cargo. She is being moved around safe-houses across the country. Last confirmed sighting was in Cairns, though she appeared to be moving south at some speed. Bye for now, The Dr. Finbar Trio
