Parent-Teacher Conferences

October 5 & 6, 2005

Summary of Evaluations

School: Monroe Primary School                                          Compiled by: Freda Doster

Please provide a summary of both the teachers’ and parents’ comments/evaluation of the Parent-Teacher Conferences. This will help in making improvements for succeeding years and reporting to the Board of Education. Keep the actual teacher and parent comments/evaluations on file at your school.

1.      Summary of teacher evaluation/comments.

Early Dismissal Conference Days were:

œ       Organized and Helpful

œ       Great

œ       Very successful and rewarding

œ       Greatly assisted by non-homeroom teachers supervising bus duty at 12:50

œ       Effective

œ       Really gave teachers an opportunity to meet with parents and discuss academics/behavior

œ       Helpful because I was able to listen to parents’ concerns

œ       Very beneficial – I think it is important to have that one on one with the parents and it helps to plan at a time they can come in

Early Dismissal Conference Days could be improved by:

œ       Making sure that all parents have transportation to the conference

œ       Parents being held accountable for not showing up

œ       Making reminder calls to parents about times and dates

œ       Somehow insuring that all parents attend their conference, especially those whose students are below grade level

œ       Scheduling conference days on Thursday and Friday

œ       Having two full days or three half days and increasing individual conference time from 15 minutes to 30 minutes

œ       Having reading teachers do a few conferences for each

œ       Not being forced to meet with parents that you have just met with or who you do not need to meet with

œ       Having all bus students leave school at 12:30

œ       Stressing to parents the importance of being on time for conferences

Early Dismissal Conference Days should be continued/discontinued because:

35 continued     0 discontinued

œ       It is great to be able to talk to each parent in a relaxed environment

œ       For some it is the only time to really communicate with parents

œ       It gives teachers an opportunity to express the importance of learning for students

œ       Parents need to be informed and involved

œ       Teachers need to meet with parents and discuss student progress

œ       This allows parents the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress in a non-threatening atmosphere

œ       It gives the parents a chance to come in a positive setting

œ       It is very important for parents to communicate with teachers about academics and behavior

œ       It allows a lot of time slots for parents with different schedules

œ       It helps us help parents and get more on a personal level to work with them and children

œ       They emphasize the importance of conferences and make it easier to meet

œ       It allows the parent and teacher to talk face to face about a students’ strengths and weaknesses

Early Dismissal Conference days are/are not important because:

35 are important     0 are not important

œ       It gives teachers and parents time to bring up any questions and concerns

œ       Parents need to see how well or not well their child is doing

œ       Parents can see the progress or regression of their children without being disruptive to class time

œ       Personal contact helps me to understand the “whip” of my students behaviors

œ       The information discussed is vital

œ       Parents want to understand the report cards

œ       It gave the parents a chance to come in at a convenient time and unfortunately it forced some to come in that needed to

œ       In some cases it is the only time you get to see the parents

œ       It assists with parent communication and student learning

œ       It helps the teachers understand the students better through the information provided by the parents

Other Comments:

œ       Thank you for taking the students who were waiting for the bus. It gave a few minutes to make last minute preparations.

œ       Thank you for helping with bus students. It was wonderful to be able to conference without trying to listen for bus numbers.

œ       It would have been nice for the classroom floors to have gotten some attention from a mop. We need to put more effort into cleaning this school so that we make the best possible impression on guests to our school.

œ       It is sometimes easier for parents to open up one-on-one. The conference days help us help our parents help our students. Working together is always a win-win for all.

œ       The only concern I have is not having the “concentrated” schedule of teaching each subject thoroughly. For example, EDNA time was cut in two. But other than that, everything was great.

œ       I think there should be more involvement from administration when there isn’t a response from a parent. Administration should take immediate action to insure the conference takes place at home or at school.

œ       Perhaps conferences could be held one day a week for two weeks. This might allow shift workers to more readily attend.

œ       Discontinuing early release and conference days would be a disservice to teachers and families, especially economically disadvantaged ones. The scheduling allows us to be flexible for the benefit of the parents.

Total Teacher Evaluations Completed 35/36 for a 97% return rate.
