I was very disappointed with this film. I couldn't get into it at all. For me, it seemed there just wasn't much to it. Maybe if I was more familiar with the artist it would be different, but I just didn't see the point of this movie. Its just a very uninteresting biography of a painter (one which mostly ignores her painting!).
I just don't see why this film was nominated for any Academy Awards (except maybe makeup). The score for the movie (for which it won an Oscar) did indeed sound Mexican, but it was boring and uninspiring. Salma Hayek's acting was okay, but certainly didn't deserve any Oscar nominations. There was no depth to it; it was mostly just hysterics.
There is one shot in the film which pretty much embodies its entire mediocrity. If you watch the movie, look for a shot towards the beginning in which the actual film of the movie is backwards. You can tell because there are a bunch of words which are written backwards there, but are written correctly in other shots. That really got under my skin; there is just no need for that sloppiness. Good job director, whatever your name is!
My rating: 5/10
