Amores Perros (2000)

February 12th, 2004

Amores Perros is actually three films combined into one, all of which are closely tied together. Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu does a very competent job in his first stint as a director. The cast gives great performances, the cinematography and editing are great, and the music is appropriate yet unconventional. The film's only real flaw is the fact that it's overly long. Even though it's almost like watching three separate movies, the material is still closely linked so one has a tendency to get a little weary of it after a while. The intense subject matter makes it even more tiresome. Overall, its a very good movie that I definitely recommend--especially if you like seeing disturbing images of dead dogs--but Irritu's second movie (21 Grams) is still my favorite of his.

My rating: 7/10
