American Splendor (2003)

American Splendor is one of the more unique movies I've seen recently. It's main claim to fame is the way it combines different genres within the same film. Essentially, the core of the movie is a narrative story with actors and whatnot, yet it is interspersed with documentary interviews with real-life people (Harvey Pekar, et al.) But that's not all: animation is used from time to time during the narrative as well. All this makes for a very unique method of storytelling, and it definitely draws the audience into the film.

The bottom line with a movie though--in my humble opinion--is that the most important thing is the story. Is it compelling? If the story is no good, it really doesn't matter how one chooses to tell it. Fortunately, Springer Bergman and Pulcini have a good story to tell here.

My Rating: 8/10
