E. Kooy      See my full list of artists

This is an oil painting I recently purchased. It is signed EKOOY. Possibly E. Kooy which is a Dutch name. I found that the surname of Kooy can also be spelled Kooyman, Kooijman, Van der Kooi and Kooistra. Supposedly, this portrait of an old bearded man was brought back from Germany in 1957 by an army Colonel. It is very well done, and has broad brush strokes, yet the detail is striking. It measures 8 by 10 inches. It is painted on plywood, which I know was used as early as 1920, and perhaps even earlier. The plywood is about 3/8 inch thick. It looks much like one of Rembrandt's subjects, though I have not seen this particular pose in a Rembrandt painting. The second jpg of the signature was taken with 30x magnification and with an infrared filter.

Please help me identify this unknown artist. If you have a painting signed by this artist, please email me the photos and I will post them here also. Perhaps by using this website, other works by this artist might become apparent, though at the present time I cannot find the artist listed in any reference guides. Please email me at [email protected].
