I agree with most of the article, Movies on a Mission. Movies have really come a long way in the last couple decades, not so much in quality, but in quantity and how important they are in the world. More people are seeing movies now than ever before; well not the last couple of years because of rising ticket prices, but say four years ago. I know for me that there are more movies releasing now that have an impact on me. Of course, there are dozens and dozens of movies from the 30s all the way up to present that have great stories and messages to tell. I simply feel that these types of movies are becoming more common, but more importantly, they are becoming more popular. For years and years, it had always been the big blockbuster action films that everyone wanted to see. In the past, it was usually the horror films that everyone went to see in theaters, before there were even VCRs. The smaller films were usually forgotten by the average person. It is still somewhat like this, but as time passes, I feel people are starting to recognize these smaller films: documentaries, foreign films, or even younger people beginning to watch movies from previous generations. There are movies that simply touch you or are memorable, such as Forrest Gump and The Shawshank Redemption, but then there are also movies now that are trying to make a difference in the world. An excellent example of a film such as this is An Inconvenient Truth. Since release, this movie has been everywhere. Word of mouth alone has made so many people run out to see it. I believe that movies such as this really help our world, and let the people know what is going on. At this years 79th Academy Awards, An Inconvenient Truth took home two Oscars; one of them for Best Documentary Feature. Not only did it win this award, this years Academy Awards were announced to be completely "green." Another documentary that was released was Supersize Me, which demonstrated the dangers of fast food in general, but mostly McDonalds. Most of my friends and family have seen this documentary and love it. I may be wrong, but I believe a documentary such as this would barely be seen by people twenty years ago. I think people simply would not care enough to see it. Today, this documentary could even be considered popular and received excellent reviews critically. The documentary is even shown in health classes all throughout the United States. Most importantly, it changed how McDonalds is run; now having a healthy section in its menu, and completely erasing the Supersize option. As important and impacting as films such as An Inconvenient Truth and Supersize Me are, there are also many other films making impacts in different way. For example, Children of Men delivers a terrifying look of what could become of our world in the future. Pans Labyrinth told a beautiful story of a girls attempted escape from the brutal tragedies of the Spanish Civil War. The messages of movies such as these two will never leave me. Movies with important messages have been around since the beginning of film making, but as time goes along, I believe movies on a mission will become more and more frequent and popular; movies on a mission to change how we look at the world for the better. This is how greatness can be achieved through the magic of movies.
