Supplies:
Herrshners 2 ply afghan yarn - blue
Small amount white fingering yarn
Size G & D Hooks
Velcro small piece
Gauge:
G hook – 5 dc = 1 inch
3 dc rows = 1 inch
Size:
12” girth (measure around body behind front legs.
10” from neck to base of tail

Stitches Used

Sc, dc, sl st, BPdc, FPdc, Dc decrease, sc decrease

Pattern Stitches

Double Crochet Decrease – (uses next 2 stitches) *YO, insert hook in next st, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, repeat from * once more, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook, (counts as 1 dc)

Front Post Double Crochet – (FPdc)
YO, insert hook from front to back around post of st indicated, YO and pull up a loop even with loop on hook, (Yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind FPdc.

Back Post Double Crochet – (BPdc)
Yo, insert hook from back to front around post of st indicated, Yo and pull up a loop even with loop on hook, (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice, skip st in front of BPdc.

 

Sweater Instructions:

Body

With G hook and blue yarn, chain 28 loosley.

Row 1... Dc in 4th ch from hook and each stitch across, turn (26 sts)

Row 2... (right side) Ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout) , dc in next dc *Fpdc around next st, dc in next 2 dc, skip 2 dc, 5 dc in next dc, skip 1 dc, dc in next 2 dc, FPdc* repeat from* *, dc in last 2 dc, turn

Row 3... (increase row) Ch 3, dc in same st and in next dc, work *BPdc around next st, dc in next 2 dc , skip next 2 dc, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc, BPdc * repeat * *,dc in next dc, 2 dc in last dc, turn (28 sts)

Row 4... Ch 3 , dc in next 2 dc, *Fpdc around next st, dc in next 2 dc, skip 1 dc, 5 dc in next dc, skip 1 dc, dc in next 2 dc, FPdc* , dc to end, turn

Rows 5 - 12... Repeat rows 3 & 4 increasing 1 stitch each side on row 3 until 38 sts.

Right Neck Shaping

Row 1... Ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, FPdc, dc in next 2 dc, skip 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, turn (14)

Row 2... Ch 3, dc in same st, skip next 2 dc, dc in next 2, BPdc around next st, dc in last 8 dc, turn (13 sts)

Row 3... (decrease row) Ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, FPdc, dc in next 2 dc, dc dec over last 3 sts, turn (12 sts)

Row 4... Ch 3, dc in next st, BPdc, dc to end, turn (11 sts)

Row 5... (decrease row) Ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, FPdc, dc dec over last 2 sts, turn (10 sts)

Row 6... Ch 3, dc in last 8 dc, turn (9 sts)

Row 7... (decrease row) Ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, dc dec over last 2 sts, turn (8 sts)

Row 8... Ch 3, dc across. Fasten off leaving a 10 inch tail.

Left Neck Shaping

Row 1... With right side facing, join with a sl st in 3rd dc of next shell st, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, skip 2 sts, dc in next 2 dc, FPdc, dc in last 8 sts, turn(14 sts)

Row 2... (decrease row) Ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, BPdc, dc in next 2 dc, dc dec, dc in last st, turn (13 sts)

Row 3... Ch 3, dc dec, dc in next dc, FPdc, dc in last 8 sts, turn (12 sts)

Row 4... (decrease row) Ch 3, turndc in next 7 dc, BPdc, dc dec, dc in last dc, turn (11 sts)

Row 5... Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc in last 8 sts. (10 sts)

Row 6... (decrease row) Ch 3, turn, dc in next 6 dc, dc dec, dc in last st, turn (9 sts)

Row 7... Ch 3, dc dec, dc in next 6 sts. (8 sts)

Row 8... Ch 3, dc across, do not fasten off

Using the 10 inch tail from other site, and holding wrong sides together, whipstitch ends of neck together.

Neck Band

Round 1... with right side facing, Ch 1, sc evenly around, join with a sl st to first sc, do not turn

Round 2... Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off main color.

Round 3... with white yarn and E hook, working in lower edges of sc, join with a sl st in in first st, skip 1 sc (5 dc in next sc, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc) around. Join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Tuck all loose ends.

Round 1 With right side facing and MC and G hook, join thread at center seam of lower nec, with a sl st, ch 1 sc in same st and evenly all the way around. Join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Round 2 With E hook and contrasting yarn.Working in bottom of Sc. Join with a sc in last sc. Ch 1( sc in same st, 5 dc in next st.) repeat around. Join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Sew Velcro to wrong side of right belly band and right side of left belly band.
