Social Development Centre (SDC) is a registered NGO selflessly working for the upliftment and overall development of slum/street dwelling children & child beggars of the area through a series of various educational & training programmes conducted in slums & organizations centers of Mahim, Khar-Danda & Chandansar village (tribal dominated area) of Virar, since past eight years.
The Centre is devotedly working towards promoting Education in the lives of children of these street dwelling communities[beggars]. since past four years. We as an Organization have successfully achieved our motives by enrolling 15 street children/child beggars in Std Ist. of the Khar Danda Municipal School and 10 street children in the;English medium of Petit Municipal School, Bandra in the new academic year (2004-05). During their attendance in school, we found a majority of children were shabbily dressed and have come without a bathe or proper oiling of hair. There has also been a risk that these children return to begging after the closure of school for the day.
In order to prevent such incidents to occur and monitor the child progress in school, we have started the DREAMZ project - A Rehabilitation cum Recreational Open Home for street children and child beggars with an aim of isolating these children from their families that force them to beg after returning from school. Here these children are provided the best of educational , food , accommodation, clothes and health, hygiene and sanitation facilities.
The children are also made aware on the advantages of maintaining cleanliness, taught to be well mannered in behavior and encouraged to be neatly dressed in school as well as home. Our main aim behind the project is give these children an opportunity, a platform to live lives as other normal children do. The Organization, at present has 20 street children/child beggars who are residing beneficiaries of the Project .
On the Government level, child beggars that are held by the police every month are been sent to different Beggars Home in the State. But due to mismanagement and negligence of the workers in these homes, the children run away and once again land upon streets with their same begging profession.
Social Development Centre (SDC) has therefore started the DREAMZ Home for such children with the motive of giving them a platform to live lives like normal children do and bring them into the mainstream of schooling through different educational and recreational programmes conducted for them. The DREAMZ Home is one on the most rare and unique projects in its kind.
The DREAMZ Home is a 500/- sq.ft room area, which comprises of an open terrace for playing, a study room etc. and is located in the area of Khar Danda. The above room area for the Project has been taken over by the Organization on rental basis.
To sustain the Project and prevent the activities from being terminated mid-way, in future, we have plans to purchase a plot for the DREAMZ Home where a permanent structure would be raised. This step will encourage us to bring in a maximum no. of street children/child beggars into a mainstream of Education. We are eagerly looking out for donations to accomplish this cause. The contributions obtained for this cause will remain with the Organization as a reserved fund.
We would also be obliged for your contributions towards supporting the ongoing cost of the Home, which includes Monthly/Yearly expenditure for nutrition/education. Any contribution in kind will be gracefully accepted & acknowledged.
