ANNANDALE MEMBERS CURLING IN MANY EVENTS
by Jim Easson
Revera Retirement presented the TCA Toronto & District Ladies Bonspiel 2008 Event November 11 - 13, 2008 with the finals at
the Host St. George's Golf & Country Club. Annandale had three ladies teams in the bonspiel. In the Open Event Lorraine Scanlan
with the team of Diane Leahy, Bea O'Regan, and Diane Easson won their first game, but dropped the next two. Also in the Open,
Rhonda Welch had Janet Alexander, April Risto, and Leslie Bainard and they also were sidelined. However the Sandra Thain team
of Barb Luffman, Joan O'Leary, and spares Kathy Kerr and Terry Pinkney, made it to the Senior Forth event final and played a very
close game but lost it in an extra end. It was the fourth year in a row the Thain team made it to the finals, but this was their first try
in the Seniors event.
The OCA Pepsi Junior Zone play-down is to be held at the Whitby Curling club November 22 to 25. Annandale has three teams
entered, and at least two of them will advance to the Regional at the Oshawa Curling Club the following weekend. The Junior Ladies
team of Lesley Pyne, Stacey Hogan, Suzanne Miller and Katie Hickey with coach Jennifer McGhee have one opponent so are
guaranteed to advance. The Junior Men's Zone only has three teams in total so at least one team will advance. The teams are
Michael Bryson, James McPherson, Sandy Martin and Josh Hall coached by Susannah Moylan, and a Bantam team entry of Ben
Bevin, Jake McGee, Chris Avery, and Carter Ardair is coached by Paul Bourque.
Other OCA Zones coming up are the Senior Men at Dalewood Golf November 28 to December 1. Annandale will be represented
by Carl Vickers with Dave Gaudette, Doug Lawson, and Geoff Peck. Then, Annandale will host the TSC Stores Tankard Zone
December 5 to 7. Entered is the home team of Wes Johnson, Pat Janssen, Tyler Anderson, and Spencer Yule.
Team Glenn Howard with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill on the front end competed in
Waterloo November 12 to 16. Howard won an unprecedented third consecutive Masters of Curling title when his team competed
against 17 of the top squads from Canada, Europe and the United States. The Masters of Curling was the first of four tournaments
in the men's Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series. The Howard team has now won all 5 of the Curling Tour Events they have
competed in this season, and were awarded a $24,500 cheque for this latest win. Next on their calendar is a trip to Brantford for the
SunLife Financial Invitational Classic November 21 to 24. Thirty-two teams will compete in a triple knockout playdown with 8 to
qualify for a share of a $47,000 purse.
