ANNANDALE CURLERS ADVANCING TO REGIONAL PLAYDOWNS March 7 & 8

by Jim Easson

Last weekend, Tim March of Annandale won the A side of the Mixed Zone Playdown in Oshawa with Julie Weagle, Patrick Jenssen, and Debra Bently, and now advances to the Regional Playdown slated for Whitby CC March 7 and 8. This event leads to the one that starts the new curling season off with a chance for a National Championship for the Provincial Winner.  The Regional will send two teams to Beaverton in April, and the winner there will wait out their chance to represent Ontario November 15-22, 2009 at the Burlington Golf & Country Club.

Annandale won with both their entries at the five team Junior Mixed Zone playdown held at the Oshawa Curling Club February 14 and 15.  Michael Bryson with the team of Emily Lindsay, Sandy Martin, and Carly Bee with coach John Lindsay won the A side.  Josh Hall teamed up with Spencer Anderson, James McPherson, and Yvonne Lalonde and coach Donna Hall to capture the B side.  Both teams now advance to the Regional in Fenelon Falls March 7 -8.  Two Junior and two Bantam teams will advance from the Regional to Marmora at the end of March for Provincial Finals.

The Bantams won on the Oshawa ice too in the six team Mixed Playdown.  Laura Arbour, Chris Avery, Kristy Hurst and Jake McGhee  and coach Jennifer McGhee for Annandale won the A side of the Bantam Mixed Zone, and also an Annandale member, Ben Bevan representing Whitby, took the B side.  Both teams now also advance to the Regional in Fenelon Falls March 7 -8.

The Archbishop Denis O’Connor Ajax Boys team were winners of the 2009 LOSSA (Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics) season and championship.  They are going to the OFSSA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) championships being hosted by Grimsby Secondary School and A.N. Myer Secondary School at the St Catherine’s Golf and Country, St Catherine’s Curling and Grimsby Clubs March 25th to March 28th. Team members are Skip, Sandy Martin, Third James McPherson, second Caleb Kachkowski-Ford, and lead is Andrew Neary.  Also, the Archbishop Denis O’Connor Mixed team was the winner of the LOSSA 2009 mixed championship.  This is the school’s fourth LOSSA gold in a row, but there is no OFSSA level event for mixed curling. Again, the skip was Sandy Martin with Ayli Kachkowski-Ford, James McPherson, and Laura Smart.  Sandy, James, and Caleb also curl at Annandale.

The next bonspiel slated for Annandale is the Annual St Pat’s Mixed Saturday March 14th, 2009.  It includes three six-end games, snacks, lunch, dinner, dance and prizes.  There are 2 Draw times of 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM start.

Canadian Women declared a Champion on Sunday.  Jennifer Jones of Manitoba won her second straight Canadian Championship.  The team now advances to the world women's championship, set for March 21 to 29 in Gangneung, South Korea.

The Ontario Men’s Championship Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill are on their fourth trip in a row to the Tim Hortons Brier.  This year it will be held in Calgary March 7 to 15.  The previous three Canadian Championships saw them win their way to the final game, but were victorious only in 2007 and went on to be crowned World Champions.  All the players will have a chance to win the Ford Hot Shots competition which will be held March 6 and final on March 7.  Last year in Winnipeg, Hart was one point away from winning the competition and took the second prize of $2,000 with 19 points versus the Saskatchewan lead Steve Laycock who, with 20 points, won a two-year lease on a 2008 Ford worth approximately $15,240.
