ENERGIZER MEN'S BONSPIEL RUNS ALL WEEK
by Jim Easson
The TCA Energizer Men's bonspiel, keeping one of the world's oldest continuous curling events alive, started TCA wide January
10. The 'spiel runs until Saturday January 17 with the finals to be hosted by Mississauga Golf & Country Club . Annandale started
with five of the 412 teams entered. Skips Glenn Bull, Dale Patterson, and Brian Hawke had their teams entered early. Two more
Annandale Senior teams have entered the fray. Sandy McMillan and his team of Eric Anderson, Brent Court, and Colin Judson,
also Barry Gillespie and team of Rick Riddell, Ray McIntaggart, and Mike McGowan. Every team plays two games the first
Saturday, and that determines which of First through Fourth event each team is placed, then starting Monday it was win or you are
out, every night of the week.
Annandale had two teams entered in the Fairfield Marriott Challenge Zone playdown held in Uxbridge January 10. Because our
Zone 6 had 19 teams entered and another zone only had one entry, three teams will advance from our zone. Chris Van Huyse,
Andrew Klein, Rob Bushfield, and Tyler Anderson were A-side finalists, and are going to the Provincial in Brighton and Trenton
January 23 -25. Annandale's Adam Sonley, Blair Metrakos, Steve Smith, and Tim LaRoche were sidelined after their second loss.
At the Provincial 32 teams will meet with 3 games each guaranteed.
Two Annandale Junior Women, Chantal Lalonde and Tracy O'Leary, came close to repeating the Ontario Junior championship they
won last season on the Danielle Inglis team out of Burlington. This running, they were sidelined in the semifinal game in Gananoque
on Saturday. Rachel Homan of the Ottawa Curling Club went undefeated in the round robin and won the final. Her team will
represent Ontario in B.C. at the end of the month.
Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill competed in the Casino Rama Skins
Game on the weekend. The team won $19,500 winning the Saturday semi-final, and another $7,000 in the Sunday final loss to the
Randy Ferbey team of Edmonton. However, the march for another crack at the Tim Hortons Brier for Team Glenn Howard
continues. They won the A side of the Regional TSC Stores Tankard in Elmira January 4, and now advance to the Provincial finals
in Woodstock February 2 - 8. The one winner out of 10 teams in Woodstock will represent Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier in
Calgary March 7 to 15. For this writer, Calgary will be the 30th Brier attendance in a row. TSN will have full coverage of the event
this year. In previous years, CBC had the rights to the semi-finals and final game.
