ANNANDALE CURLERS WIN MIXED ZONE PLAYDOWN

by Jim Easson

Annandale had two teams entered in the Mixed Zone play downs at Oshawa CC February 21-22.
Blair Metrakos skipped the team of Kathleen Johnson, Richard Peach and Chantal Peach but did not advance after going 1 -2.  Tim March was also entered and won the A side of the draw with Julie Weagle, Patrick Jenssen, and Debra Bently.   The March team now advances to the Regional Playdown slated for Whitby CC March 7 and 8. This event leads to the one that starts the new curling season off with a National Championship.  The winner of the Provincial in Beaverton in April will wait out their chance to represent Ontario November 15-22, 2009 at the Burlington Golf & Country Club. .

The Oshawa Major league had 11 teams in the league this year, and the winning team was Greg Timbers (vice: Barry Acton, 2nd: Warren Leslie, lead: Kent Cochrane) who defeated Blair Metrakos, who played 2nd, (Skip: Chris Van Huyse, Vice: Andrew Klein, Lead: Scott March) in the Final 8-7 on Wednesday, February 11th.   Greg posted a leading record of 8-2 in the round robin season and Blair Metrakos came a close 2nd.  The top 6 teams made the play-offs with the top 2 getting a by to the Semi-Finals.  Warren Leslie was on the winning team all of the last 3 years; previous 2 years with Gord Norton skipping, himself playing Vice,  Mike Trudeau playing Second and Alex Bianchi playing Lead.  The winning team collected $1000 at the closing banquet February 18.

Annandale hosted a full Ladies Olympic Bonspiel Saturday February 21st.  The Olympic Committee of Rhonda Welch, Janet Alexander, Leslie Bainard, and April Risto worked hard to make the day a success, as did George in the kitchen.  All 16 participating teams were assigned a country flag, and it worked well to track the teams.  The Gold Medal Winners and the opportunity to compete in the Melitta Bonspiel of Champions was the Davison Team from "Australia" skipped by Debbie Davison, with Karen Pritchard, Diane Fujita and Jane Palmer.  The Gordon Team from "U.S.A." was the Silver Medalists and the Desilets (Leung) Team from "England" took home the Bronze Medals.  All the teams played 2 eight end games using a "skins format.  The top 6 teams were into the prize money.

Ontario Championship Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill are getting organized for their fourth trip in a row to the Tim Hortons Brier.  This year it will be held in Calgary March 7 to 15.  The previous three Canadian Championships saw them win their way to the final game, but were victorious only in 2007 and went on to be crowned World Champions.
