ANNANDALE CURLERS OFFICIATING AT PROVINCIAL CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Two Annandale curlers, Joan O’Leary and Dave Hutchison are officiating at Ontario Curling Championships.  Joan was an official last week at the Oakville Women’s Tournament of Hearts finals, and Dave will start in Woodstock for the TSC Stores Men’s Curling finals February 2nd and shifts Wednesday to Oshawa Curling Club for the Bantam Provincial Championships. An Annandale Bantam curler, Joan Moore, will compete in this provincial playing lead for Carly Howard (yes, Glenn Howard’s daughter) February 4th through 7th.

Blair Metrakos skipped an Annandale team to victory in the OCA Colts Zone at Tam Heather January 31 to February 2.  With Metrakos were Chris Van Huyse, Andrew Klein, and Scott March.  Twelve teams played in a double knockout draw.  The team now advances to the Regional Playdown at East York February 14.  Two of the eight teams at the Regional will advance to the Ontario final slated for Leaside March 18.

Last Saturday January 31, Annandale hosted the annual Robbie Burns FunSpiel; a mixed Funspiel/Jitney.  The event was full with 32 teams, with the top team simply getting  bragging rights.  There were two six end fun games, lunch, off-ice games, dinner, dance and everyone got to the prize table.  Highland dancing, Scottish food, and a bag piper were on the agenda too.  Thanks to the convenors Linda and Arthur McCrorie, Lynda and Bob Pellow, and Marilynne and Andy Gordon.

Annandale has Susannah Moylan, with Rhonda Lawson, Shannon Sliva and Heather MacDonald competing in the ladies Intermediates Zone February 7-8, at the Whitby Curling Club.  Two of the six teams in this double knockout will advance to the Regional in St. George’s February 28 which will send two teams to the Ontario finals in Brampton March 11- 14.

By the time this article is printed, Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill will be in the thick of the TSC Stores Tankard 2009 Ontario Curling Provincial finals.  The event is in Woodstock February 2 - 8.  One of the teams that Howard will face is the Rob Lobel rink from Whitby. The one winner out of 10 teams will represent Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier in Calgary March 7 to 15. Team Howard has won the Ontario championship the last three years in a row.
