TEAM HOWARD ADVANCES TO REGIONAL CURLING PLAYDOWN
by Jim Easson
The TCA Energizer Men's Bonspiel (a.k.a. Canada Life Bonspiel) is one of the world's oldest continuous curling events and it runs
TCA wide January 10 - 17, 2009. Annandale has four teams entered so far in the Bonspiel. Arthur McCrorie, Glenn Bull, Dale
Patterson, and Brian Hawke are listed and eligible for the early bird draw. With Hawke are Jim Easson, Wes Stitt, and Mark
Scanlan.
For Sandra Thain and her Annandale women's team of Barb Luffman, Meaghan Snow, and Joan O'Leary, the next OCA event is
the Women's Tankard, the two team event, next January 24 in Sutton. They will be curling with Rhonda Welch, Janet Alexander,
April Risto and Leslie Bainard.
Annandale has another team entered in the Fairfield Marriott Challenge Zone playdown to be held in Uxbridge January 10, 2009.
Chris Van Huyse, Andrew Klein, Rob Bushfield, and Tyler Anderson are going to join the playdown which includes Annandale's
Adam Sonley, Blair Metrakos, Steve Smith, and Tim LaRoche. Two zone winning teams head directly to the Provincial in Brighton
and Trenton January 23 -25 where 32 teams will meet with 3 games each guaranteed.
Annandale is closed for the Christmas break. The last league game of 2008 was the Friday Mixed League on December 19, and
now ice maintenance will be completed for the curlers to restart Sunday January 4, 2009.
Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill won the B side of the TSC
Stores Tankard Zone 10 in Penetanguishene on December 20 - 21. They now advance to the Regional in Elmira January 3 and 4.
There, eight zone winners will compete in a double knockout that will send two teams to the Provincial finals slated for Woodstock
February 2 - 8. In a row, Team Howard has fought its way to the last three Canadian Brier championships final game. Ontario
awards a direct entry to the Provincial Championship only if the team actually wins that final game.
