TURCOTTE OF AJAX ADVANCES TO ONTARIO SENIORS CURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
by Jim Easson
Ajax resident Bob Turcotte, curling out of Scarboro Golf and Country Club, won the A side of the Regional Senior Men's
Playdown held in Lakefield last weekend. He now advances to the Provincial Championship in his home club January 14 - 18. Eight
teams will play a round robin and send the victor to Summerside PEI next March for the Canadian finals. Turcotte already has three
Canadian Senior titles to his credit.
Sandra Thain and her Annandale women's team of Barb Luffman, Joan O'Leary and Janet Alexander also competed in Lakefield in
the OCA Senior Women Regional, but were unable to advance. Thain's next OCA playdown planned is the Women's Tankard, the
two team event, for next January 24 in Sutton.
Annandale has a team entered in the Fairfield Marriott Challenge Zone playdown to be held in Uxbridge January 10, 2009. Adam
Sonley will skip a team consisting of Blair Metrakos, Steve Smith, and Tim LaRoche. This OCA event has no Regional, so two
zone winning teams head directly to the Provincial where 32 teams will meet with 3 games each guaranteed. The Provincial is slated
for Brighton and Trenton January 23 -25.
Annandale will soon be closing the leagues for the Christmas break. The last league game of 2008 will be the Friday Mixed League
on December 19, and then ice maintenance will be completed for the curlers to restart Sunday January 4, 2009.
Team Glenn Howard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill next scheduled competition is
the TSC Stores Tankard Zone 10 in Penetanguishene December 20 and 21. Eight teams are entered in the double knockout
playdown which will send two teams to the Regional in Elmira January 3 and 4.
