ANNANDALE HELD AN EXCELLENT LAST CHANCE BONSPIEL

On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday April 19, 2009, Annandale hosted the annual Men's Last Chance Bonspiel. It was the last curling event for the Annandale season, and the skaters had use of the ice after the final curling games. The event was full with 32 teams and 16 of them won their way to qualify for a return to Sunday. Winning the event was the Jim Thedorf team from Oshawa Curling Club who collected $600 over the Barry Moylan home team after a close game that Moylan led for most of the way. Their winnings came from a total purse of over $3,000.00. Michael Bryson won the second event and $300 over Warren Leslie. The third event and $250 was captured by the David Brunelle team from Penetanguishine over Gerry Pinkney, and Blair Metrakos took the fourth collecting $200 competing against the Arnold Retz team.
The Men's Competitive League finished on Tuesday April 14 with final games for each league. Winners in the playoff games for the six leagues A to F received cash prizes. Winning the club championship in the A division was the team of Blair Metrakos, Andrew Klein, Brad Cowan and Scott March. The win was tight over the team of Warren Leslie, Alex Bianchi, Tim March and Ray Zani. After the games were completed, all of the men's league players enjoyed companionship, a closing dinner and a few draughts.
April 14 to 19, 2009, the curling event for Team Glenn Howard was to compete in
a draw featuring Canada’s best teams. The Grey Power Players’ Championship
in Alberta was the final 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series
events. The top men’s and women’s teams on the Capital One Cup standings
following the event were each to receive $50,000 (CDN). Team
Glenn Howard with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and the front end of
Brent Laing and Craig Savill were the defending champions, were unable to
repeat, however won the $50,000 bonus for top team in the Capital One event
standings and also took home $16,000 for runner-up
position.
Randy Ferbey of Edmonton, Alta. secured the fourth and final
direct berth into the 2009 Canadian Trials after defeating Howard
10-7 in the final of the Grey Power Players’ Championship,
With the score tied 7-7 in the eighth, Ferbey’s foursome secured their second
career Players’ Championship title and a berth in the Trials, on the game’s
final shot when fourth Dave Nedohin made a delicate open takeout for three
points.
Team Ferbey’s win at the Grey Power Players’ Championship also propelled the
squad into second place in the Capital One Cup standings. By finishing second to
Howard’s team in the inaugural points race, Ferbey’s foursome earned an
additional $25,000 (CDN) bonus.
Howard clinched the Capital One Cup’s $50,000 (CDN) first place prize on
Saturday
after defeating Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, Man.) in the tournament’s semi-finals. By
finishing second at the Grey Power Players’ Championship with a record of 5-1,
Howard’s squad took home an additional $16,000 (CDN) along with 30.000 CTRS
points.
Canadian champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) finished third in the Capital
One Cup standings, earning a $10,000 (CDN) bonus.
