Remembering Friends
Translation & Commentary by Seema Arif
Divine Face of Jalal ud-Din Rumi
Is it fair that Im suffering hardship in prison?
Thou art flying on pasture and trees, the freedom.
Dear Friends! reckon your friendship I miss
Im in prison and you enjoy the garden bliss
O my companion do remember the bird in cage
While chirping to see fresh mornings face.
Remember the time spent together and friendship,
Owe you certainly my Love, my companionship.
The lovers cherish sweet memories morning till noon
Especially when their Love is like Laila and Majnun.
O friends! Busy drinking cups in sweet company
Me but swallowing bitterness of being lonely
Raise a cup of wine just in my name
Let thyself to be fair in this game
Or while drinking for old friendships sake
While drinking spill a drop, earth may take
I wonder why? Where that trust had bygone?
The promise kept by those sweet lips is torn
Bereavement follows disregarding attitude naturally.
Sin when answered by a sin, whats so bad actually?
Oh God! Thy wrath and rage made in war
To my soul is sweeter than listening to guitar.
Oh God! Better than wealth is the hardship imposed
I love Your revenge with my heart, my soul
Tasting the fire I wonder for your radiance worth
Your grief so beholding; felicity can I utter a word?
Your curtness is but sweeter than ever
Anyone reach thy subtlety, may never.
If thy covetousness is but ever caught
Instead of wailing bitterly, one must laugh
I weep, I entreat, that makes certain
He takes mercy and lessens the pain.
I really adore His cruelty, and His kindness
Loving the opposites my wondering sense
I Love the Source where they cove
How can I survive but without Love
By God if Im away from this thorn
I like nightingale may have my heart torn
Strange bird in sadness her face mourn
The grief may drown the garden, the thorn
Not simply a nightingale, but a dragon of fire
Love has consumed her pleasing attire
He Loves Whole He is the only One
Loves Himself and Love He has won.
This passage begins with Hindi parrot's message to her friends in Hind, but later Rumi carries on to remember his Friend - The Only One - God Himself
