God's Will

O Brother! Be conscious for a while, will you?
Thee too enjoy both spring and autumn in you!
O Brother! Leave aside for a while thy self bright (16)
Be revived in your spirit, drowning in mystic light
Witness the garden of thy heart green and blossoming
All is covered with buds, roses, cypress and jasmine
Branches with bounty of leaves green are festooned
Abundance of flowers hath jungle, mansions adorned

The message commending from Divine Intelligence
The cypress and Sunbal forests doth bear fragrance
Flower hath not been there, but thee smelt its scent
Thee realized intoxication where no wine was spent (17)
The Scent is the guide on the way, thy mentor
It shall lead you to paradise: Cistern of Kauthar (18)
Scent is cure for Eye, the vision enlightened (19)
Blinded eyes of Jacob it had thus opened

The stink robs eye of light, hath it darkened
The scent of Joseph may lead to Beloved one
If thou art not Joseph, Jacob thee may become
Stay busy in crying; wailing is thy due ransom
When thou art not Shirin, be Farhad the lover
Not being Laila, being Mujnun is thy leisure. (20)

16) Human self is that projected image of oneself, which is created through information procured and stored through our five senses. The wakefulness demands being revived in ones spirit. It is the opening of inner-eye of Qalb that makes one live and conscious of not just ones own existence but to the whole life process and it is only possible through Divine Guidance.

(17) We may see what is not there and smell through imagination or remembrance. So is one reminded of God, his benevolence and bounties bestowed upon us in Life through His kind remembrance.

(18) Cistern of
Kauthar is one of the streams of Paradise promised to steadfast believers.

(19) Prophet Jacob had been blinded because of weeping too much in bereavement of his beloved Son, Joseph. When his shirt was brought to him; its scent brought back light of his eyes. He could now see Joseph. Smell is the keenest of senses endowed to human beings. It is overpowered by sight, but leads a blind. So if one does not know the way to his goal, he will have to make use of his imagination to reach that.
(20)
Shirin Farhad and Laila Majnun are celebrated lovers of Persian folklore. In Love the roles do not matter. All are one: the beloveds are lovers and the lovers beloved. Rumi advises us: Do not go for a status; adopt a role if you want to reach a goal.

At worldly level it gave message of hope and faith to Muslims who were downtrodden by attacks of heathen Mongols. It assures them that they may relive as nation by realigning and reforming themselves in light of Divine Guidance. However, in order to reach this goal, they shall have to forgo all social evils that have corrupted them. Rumi admonishes the Muslims to stop fighting for physical existence but strive hard for their intellectual and moral development, being the vicegerent of God in this life process.
