Dramaturgy can be referred to a...
a. CHARACTERISTIC: In the section, The Discourse of Dramatic Criticism, Patrice Pavis (c1982) describes dramaturgy as the analysis of the text of the mise en scène, according to the treatment of time and space, the configuration of characters in the dramatic universe, the sequential organisation of the episodes of the Story. This means to say that dramaturgy in this sense of the word is the study of the set of characteristics that make a play what it is. (Pavis 1982: 100)
b. ROLE: Dramaturgy as a role describes one who carries out dramaturgical tasks. This entails the dramaturg having to fulfil any number of roles in the theatre (see details on FUNCTION). The title of ‘dramaturg’ denotes that this person will provide the essential ‘outside eye’ to the entire production process, while injecting valuable artistic support and critique, in a bid to keep the production in line with the company’s artistic aims.
c. FUNCTION: Dramaturgy as a function requires the dramaturg to fulfil a number of the tasks (see DRAMATURGICAL TASKS). This site is devoted to the exploration of the functions of a dramaturg in a theatre company, with some specific references to strategies and resource-availability in Singapore.
