The Play...

This play revolves around the life of a simpleton Bholaram, an innocent and affectionate person by nature and an epitome of selflessness. His belief is simple, to generate more happiness than one consumes.

Rajbahadur Krishnakant, a big industrialist has a double faceted character in the story. The one during the day when he beieves in cut-throat competition and has a suspicious mind. And the other during night when he drowns himself in alcohol and even attempts suicide in disgust at his outer shell of a hard hearted, uncaring person.

Bholaram meets rajbahadur in a bar where bholaram is a waiter. Rajbahadur is fascinated by his innocence and finds a true friend in him. During their conversation in the bar, Rajbahadur appoints him the DCO of his company and gets him released by the manager.

Next day, Bholaram in the illusion of being the DCO goes to Rajbahadur’s office. At the gate, the santri tries to stop him but by his good sense of humour , he manages to get inside. There he meets the secretary and after listening about her daughter’s illness he grants her leave. At the same time, Anjali, a beautiful but blind girl with her niece Malti, comes to Rajbahadur’s office to collect the amount due after her father’s death. Bholaram understands her problem and promises to give the money and she leaves. Rajbahadur, who is now back to his hard herated self enters the office and forgetting all the previous night’s events throws Bholaram out.

Kamlini, Rajbahadur’s wife, is a victim of his cruelty. Both have a big fight over Rajbahadur’s attitude. He suspects her character and leaves her in a distressed condition.

Meanfile, Bholaram goes to Anjali’s house feeling sorry for not bringing her money. Bholaram gets attracted to Anjali due to her serene beauty and simplicity and the latter gets impressed by the formers optimistic attitude and caring nature. They both fall in love but don’t confess.

That night, Rajbahadur again meets Bholaram in a garden. After realizing all the mistakes he attempts suicide but fails. To undo his mistakes he now appoints Bholaram as the C.O. of his company.

The next day at office, Bholaram calls Bondre Guruji’s Yoganand Nisarg ashram and instructs them to admit Rajbahadur either by wish or by force. He then talks to Anjali about her eye’s operation and promises to arrange for remaining 700 rupees for doctor’s fee. And he soon manages that when sarpanch Durgawati Deshpande and the master of the village Chimanvadi comes to the office to discuss the problem pertaining to inauguration of Hambirrao’s statue in their village by Rajbahadur. Bholaram suggests an idea and agrees to stand as the statue. After all this Rajbahadur again comes to the office and throws Bholaram out yet again despite his desperate efforts to convince him and express his identity.

On the other side, Jagdish, Rajbahadur’s business partner and good friend, on his persuation goes to his house to cunningly check kamlini’s charcter in which Kamlini succeds but is shattered by her husband’s vulgar thinking. And when Rajbahadur comes back, she also attempts to burn herself but Rajbahadur slaps her and then they both reveal their regrets and finally Rajbahadur is left stranded as kamlini proves him wrong.

Rajbahadur again meets Bholaram in the park and now completely frustrated by his baseless suspicion over Kamilini now persuades Bholaram to shoot him with a pistol. While Rajbahadur is away and Bholaram practices to shoot a police inspector catches him and and he is imprisoned for two months for illegal possession of a gun.

After Bholaram’s release from the prison, he meets secretary and comes to knoiw about the major changes in Rajbahadur that he rarely drinks and has improve upon his relations with Kamlini. and he also comes to know about Anjali’s eye sight. He goes back to the bar.

One day, Rajbahadur, in a completely changed outlook comes to the bar and meets Bholaram. Then Bholaram realizes that his friend has attained a level of self actualization and has gone far out of his reach but Rajbahadur denies this and proposes him to join an ashram that Rajbahadur has started, as the the head but Bholaram refuses to take this offer.

Bholaram, after realizing that his image is just of an entertainer and that Anjali will be shocked on seeing him not the way that she expected, he decides not to meet her and writes her a letter expressing his feelings. He tells her that although his lifestyle amuses people but sometimes even he feels outcast in this world and the laughs does not always please him. He feels that his life is just a joke for others and tells her that he is not the one she has searched for, he is not handsome and she may find many better matches than him and he leaves her life and Anjali is also left stranded at this act of his, helpless…

The play ends bholaram as the playback of bringing happiness to everybody’s life around him, is left alone with his tears just like a candle which brings light to others but melts away in the end…
