The Play...

Based on Novel by Howard Fast, Spartacus tells story of the rise of  slave rebellion against the Roman Empire in 70 B.C. led by the eponymous hero. Big production with lots of interesting characters, with the central one of course being Sparatacus. The main plot is the rise of Spartacus from a slave in the Nubian Gold Mines to a Gladiator to a leader and in the end  to hero of almost mythical proportions. Although, Sarkar does not seem to be interested in exploring him as a person (e.g. his relation with Varinia, friendship with Draba are played down) but more as a phenomena. In fact most of what we know of Spartacus (also Varinia) we learn from other people. One of the most applauded scenes of the play was the description of the war by the Roman soldier to the Crassus.
And in the background is the power struggle between two powerful Senators Crassus (the general who finally crushes the rebellion) and Grachhus which culminates into the struggle to possess Varinia. Meanwhile, Cicero is trying to wake the Romans out of their complacency and warn them that their over dependence on slaves will destroy the Roman Empire .
The comic relief is provided by the vivacious character of Batiatus, the sly trader who is being questioned by the senators because he was the one who trained Sparatacus to be gladiator.
