| Although I built this site filled with suggestions on how to create themed dramatic play centres, we can't underestimate the importance of the standard house centre (or dolly centre - depending on your chioce of terms.) Playing "house" helps children develop much needed social skills. It also helps children in understanding how each family and how they function is different. (Children will often mimic their own family routines when playing house) Children are also encouraged to step outside of gender roles with "daddy" taking care of the baby while "mommy" goes to work As with all other settings, a house centre can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be. To create a house centre on a budget, common household items can be used (an end table for a kitchen table and small children's chairs, pillows and blankets for beds) And remember, empty food containers (cereal boxes, plastic ketchup bottles, etc) are a great addition. Many furniture stores will give away their old boxes and these are great for making just about any appliance (washer, dryer, fridge, stove, etc) If you're willing to spend a little more there are many styles of kitchen centres available at most toys stores. Big or small there is one out there to meet your needs. Costume jewelery and old clothes and shoes that mom and dad don't wear anymore are great for dress up and make the children feel "all grown up". The key to a great house centre is to offer the children a 'home' environment. The more it feels like a house, the more they will play in it. |
