Homework 5

In every position given below these ideas can help you find the solution

  1. Identify the ambush. Which piece is hiding, which piece is covering it and what opponent's piece is in the line of attack?
  2. Once you identify all the pieces involved try to uncover an attack (discovered attack or check) that will let you win the most material or maybe even give mate.
White pawn on e6 is attacking 2 Black pieces. What happens if Black Bishop captures the pawn?

Hint: How can we open the hiding piece?

Black Queen is attacked by the White Bishop and it looks like Black needs to capture it. However they find a way to give a discovered check that cannot be countered. Black moves. Black rook on d5 is pinned and seemingly cannot move away. But they turn pin into discovered attack.

Hint: White has a weak first rank and if Black Rook can attack it they will win. Black moves.

White Bishop on d4 is pinned. White  finds a way to unpin it and open an attack on the Black Queen at the same time.

Hint: Black King on the black square would allow the Bishop to move away with check.

White finds a devastating discovered attack that wins a Queen or leads to mate. White has a Queen and Bishop setup. However there are no pieces in front of it. White moves and wins a Rook by utilizing this setup.

Hint: Black's Queen ends up a target if they try to avoid losing a Rook.

White moves and wins a Rook using a discovered attack. White finds a way to promote their pawn on c7 to get a Queen.

Hint: 1)Black Queen is blocking the way. Divert it. 2)Black should not have enough time to capture the new Queen.

Black moves and wins a Bishop.

Hint: So far there is no discovered attack, but Black Bishop and White King are on the same diagonal.
