Homework 4

In every position given below these ideas can help you find the solution

  1. Identify the pin construction. It might exist in the position already or you might need to create it.
What piece is doing the pinning? Which piece is pinned and reluctant to move. What is the target behind the pinned piece that prevents the piece from moving away?
  2.
    1. How can we win by pinning or attacking the pinned piece (putting more pressure on it)?
    2. Or if we can break the pin by moving the pinned piece away.

If White can get to b7 square marked in red Black King will be mated. White moves.

Black is threatening a mate on b2 square marked in red. And White Queen is the only protector. It is standing on the same diagonal as a White King. Remember that a pinned piece is a bad protector. Black moves.

White sacrificed a Knight and now wins it back by increasing the pressure on the pinned piece. White moves.
White is threatening to take on g7 with the Queen and give mate. White Queen cannot be taken with the pawn. Why? Black makes a move after which capture of the White Queen is now possible. What is that move?
It seems that Black Knight on f6 is immobilized and should not move. Why? However Black finds a way (involving the f2 square marked in red) to unpin their Knight. This is similar to lesson example.
Black Queen is trapped and has nowhere to go. Can we attack it? White moves.
