"I want them found!" They lost...

"He's looking for us." And they get another chance.

"They are no more than children!" He wants them dead...

"We are ageless." Just like the other Digidestined.

"One boy, five girls." They want to survive...

"We have to split up." To get their revenge.

"Another child died tonight..." The world....

"We have to hide our computers, our rings, and our Digimon." Wants Freedom...

"The Digikids are still on the loose..." But Freedom is now gone.

"Change your name..." They must hide...

"We will search every house if we must!" Or die.

"Change your looks..." The worlds once again depend on them.

"The Digikids stand against Demon..." They are the only Digidestined left...

"We are alone." And they know it.

"Check their backgrounds!" They are called by the world...

"I am no longer Kat, and I can't be Mel..." The Digikids.

"Chase them down!" They call themselves...

"We don't know where each other is going, or their name..." Watchers...

"Thirty-two died today..." Digimon Watchers.

"Start a rebellion, but keep it a secret." The worlds need to protect them...

"They must die!" But how do you protect your leader's enemies...

"We must live!" When anyone could be one of his men...

"Get her!" And they don't trust a soul...

"We'll meet again..." Not even each other.

"Demon has one Digikid..." One battle has been lost...

"We don't know anything..." Bringing on the war...

"Keep her alive, for now." That their enemy believes he's won.

"Don't go after another if they've been caught..." But he doesn't seem to understand...

What it means to win a battle, and leave the war in Fate's hands...

Their pasts are hidden. Demon knows them. He wants their blood. They are known to the world as the Digikids. They want revenge. It's six against one, and Demon's winning...

Digital Runaways
Katraina Monrastrie
By Katmon =^.^= Ichijouji

Zoe and Dana Lafferty walked over to the Washington Post stand. Zoe put in the quarter and Dana pulled it open as the quarter hit the bottom. Dana pulled out the paper and let the door slam shut. Dana, who was only six, hopped up and down with the paper. Zoe, who was twelve, grinned at her sister's excitement.

"Do you have a quarter I could borrow?" A voice from behind the girls made Zoe step protectively in front of her sister, hiding her from view. "I'm not going to hurt you, or your little sister, Zoe-kun." The soft voice spoke.

Zoe watched the girl with dark brown hair and deep blue eyes. She looked kind enough. "How do you know my name?"

The girl grinned. "I know everything. I know that you two were born here, in America, but your mom was born in England, while your father was born in Japan. I know more than you can guess."

Dana giggled and ran up to the girl, despite her sister's protests. "I'm Dana. Who are you?"

"Kaitlyn. You remind me of my little brother."

"Where is he?"

"In his grave, may he rest in peace. I miss him. He ran away. When he came back he got sick. He died not to long ago." The girl looked really sad. She knelt before Dana, looking the girl straight in the eye. "Don't ever run away, got it. It'll only make your problems worse."

Dana nodded. "Whatever you say, Kaitlyn." The older girl stood and turned to go. "Where are you going?"

"Where ever the wind may lead me."

"But I thought you just said not to run away." Dana cried.

Kaitlyn turned back. "Will-chan was my only family. I live on my own. Besides, I'm old enough."

Zoe put a hand on Dana's shoulder. "You only look about twelve. Where are you from?"

"I'm from everywhere at once, and nowhere at all. I'm older than death, and younger than birth. I'm alive, and I'm dead. I can be your best friend," Her eyes darkened. "or your worst nightmare."

"Can she stay with us, Zoe?" Dana asked.

"If she can get a job, or at least help out around the house." Zoe replied, glancing at Kaitlyn.

"I can't get a job, I never finished school, and don't plan to. I can help out around your house." The girl said softly.

Zoe looked at Dana's pleading face. "Why not. Come on." They started off, Zoe leading, Dana and Kaitlyn following.

"What's in your bag, Kaitlyn?" Dana asked.

"Beyond my kitten, I've no clue." The girl mumbled.

"You have a kitten?!"

"Hai."

"Is it real?"

"Hai."

"Can I see it?"

The girl paused. She looked at her bag. "Kat-chan?"

A little black head peeked out from Kaitlyn's bag. It looked around cautiously. She saw saw Dana, gave a little cat smile and hid back in the bag. Dana smiled. "Is your kitten's name Cat?"

"With a 'K'. She's kinda shy." Kaitlyn looked down at the paper in Dana's hands. "Mind if I take a look at that?" She asked quietly.

Dana looked down at the paper herself and peeled the front section from the others. "Sure. Me and Zoe are the only ones who seem to read it anyway."

"Zoe and I." Kaitlyn corrected as she took the paper. Dana nodded and Kaitlyn looked at the headlines. * 'Stocks plummet as Wall Street reopens? US Airways cuts jobs? Dow off 685; Fed cuts rates in effort to confirm? Bush warns of casualties of war? Taliban asks clerics to rule on surrender of Bin Laden? President says Bin Laden is wanted 'Dead or Alive'? Bush visits mosque to forstall hate crimes? FBI questions men suspected of planning other hijackings?' What is this? Did I land in a different world... In 2001? September 18, 2001. I guess I have a lot of questions to ask, and lots to answer too!*

" 'In the misfortune of our best friends we often find something not displeasing' or so said La Rochefoucauld. What are you thinking about Kaitlyn?" Zoe asked from beside her.

"How far away I've been from the rest of this world."

"Hum... I guess if you travel a lot, it's hard to hear about world news, but I can hardly see how you would miss this."

"Well, I did."

"Then I have even more questions."

"Wait until we get to your house, then you can question away. Doesn't mean I can and will answer everything, but... Well, we'll see."

"Gotcha. We can do show and tell tonight, after Dana is abed."

"Why must you be so protective of her?"

"She's my sister! It's my job! Didn't you always try and keep your brother safe?!"

"Nai. It wasn't my job. At four, I may have, but by the time he reached six, I let him choose his own way."

"And how old was he when he ran away?"

"Sixteen. He ran the day after his half birthday." Kaitlyn looked Zoe in the eye. "Little brothers and sisters know more than you think. Think of how you were at six."

"How old are you?"

"I was seventeen when Will-chan ran. I am now ageless."

"Why do you always speak in riddles?!" Zoe asked, desperation filling her voice.

"Vir sapit qui pauca loquitur." Zoe gave her a blank look. "It is a wise man who speaks little."

*Grrr...* Zoe sped up to get ahead as the other two laughed. *So, Dana knows more than I think, huh. I doubt that. She doesn't go anywhere without me. This why we're schooled at home. Kaitlyn doesn't know what she's saying.* Zoe decided as their house came into view.

"We're home!" Dana cried as they walked through the door.

"Hello girls. Who's your friend?"

"Konnichi wa, Lafferty-sama. Watashi no namae Monratrie Kaitlyn." Kaitlyn said in a sure tone.

Mrs. Lafferty just stared. Her husband stood from the table to inspect the new arrival. "Konnichi wa, Kaitlyn-kun. Doku kara anata manabu nihongo?" He asked softly.

Kaitlyn grinned. "Watashi manabu nihongo kara tomodachi naka de watashi no sekai."

"Anata sekai nai kore ichi?"

"Nai. Watashi no sekai naka de sodo. Watashi koko de no tame ni koto o nan demo tasuke watashi dekiru eru." She explained.

Mrs. Lafferty gave an experated sigh. The two looked at her. "James, I'm glad you've found someone who speaks your language, but please, stick to English around me." She shot a look at Kaitlyn. "If you can speak English."

"I am fluent in many different languages, Mrs. Lafferty. I myself was born in America, so English is my first language." Kaitlyn said softly.

Mrs. Lafferty smiled. "Good. What languages do you speak?"

"Any, but English, Japanese, and Latin are my best."

"You didn't tell us that!" Dana cried.

Kaitlyn grinned. "It never came up."

"Mom, dad," Dana asked softly. "Can Kaitlyn stay with us a while?"

Mrs. Lafferty looked at Kaitlyn in surprise. "Why?"

Kaitlyn sighed. "I'm a wanderer. I don't have a home. Your daughters offered me a place to stay, for a time."

"Where are your parents dear?" Mrs. Lafferty asked.

"Dead." Came the reply. "My brother died not that long ago. My twin sister and I split up."

"To get help." Mr. Lafferty whispered.

Kaitlyn nodded. "Help against Demon, he who killed my family, and most of my friends."

"But, I thought your brother died from being sick." Dana whispered.

Kaitlyn's blue eyes went almost black. "I lied." She looked at the adults. "I'm sorry. I have a problem with lying. I understand if you want me to go." She turned towards the door, as if to go.

"The least you can do is tell us the truth." Zoe mumbled.

Kaitlyn turned to Zoe. "I lie to protect what little family I've left."

"But you need the help." Mr. Lafferty pointed out.

Kaitlyn looked at her bag. "So, what do you say, Katmon-chan?"

Katmon popped her head up from the bag. "You said it yourself, we need the help if we're to defeat Demon."

Kaitlyn turned to the four surprised faces. "My real name is Katrania Monratrie, Kat for short. I'm a Digidestined, in my world. Katmon-chan here is my Digimon pal. Demon is our enemy. He blew up the other Digidestined, minus my twin, our four friends, and myself, right in front of us. We split up to gain help, to destroy Demon. I guess I landed on a planet that has yet to be affected by Demon." She sighed and looked at Mr. Lafferty. "My father's name was James."

"What was your mom's?" Mrs. Lafferty asked.

"Atrai."

"Humm... Call me Alice, Kat. You can stay here, if you want, and we'll think about helping you." Mrs. Lafferty said.

Kat grinned. "Mind if I call you Alice-san?"

"Yes. Dana, show Kat the guest room." Dana smiled and dragged Kat up the stairs, Katmon following.

"Why didn't you tell us you needed help?" Dana asked.

"It wasn't something for you two to decided by yourselves. Your parents had to be in on it too." Katmon explained, jumping up on Kat's shoulder and making her flinch.

Kat glared at the little Digimon. "How many times have I told you not to do that?" She asked.

"My paws hurt." The little Digimon whined.

"YOW!" Kat cried as Katmon flexed her claws in her shoulder. "Off my shoulder. You've done that one time too many." She growled, placing Katmon on the floor.

Dana grinned as they came to the guest room and she opened the door. "This is one of the nicer rooms of the house. Let me know if you don't like it."

Kat looked in. "That's far more fancy than I'm used to."

"But, aren't you a Digidestined?"

Kat grinned as Katmon made herself comfortable on the bed. "Digidestined aren't treated as well as you may think. I live in my own house, in my own room. We can get things for free, if we want. Lately I've just been staying wherever I could. Life is hard for everyone, Dana-kun."

"Oh. If you want, I'll get you one of the less fancy rooms."

Katmon looked up from the bed. "No need. No need. Here's fine."

The two girls laughed and walked in. They sat in chairs, since Katmon refused to give up the bed, and Kat opened her bag. "Let's see... My laptop, extra clothing, a cloak... That's interesting."

"What?" Katmon asked, walking over to Kat.

"Why would I need a cloak?"

"I've no clue. You may need it when we get home."

"So... Never mind, it doesn't matter. Oh! Money!"

Dana walked over. "How much?"

"Enough to pay your parents rent." Kat stood and walked downstairs, Dana walking to the room she shared with her sister to tell Zoe. "James-san, Alice?"

The two adults looked up. "Hai." James said. Alice sighed and the other two grinned.

Kat put some money on the table before her. "Rent, for letting me stay here." She bowed and went back upstairs.

The adults exchanged glances. "Now what? Were fine on money." Alice whispered.

James smiled. "Send it to the relief fund. Kat-san can give it to them herself."

"We'll eat out. Get the girls."

James walked to the bottom of the stairwell. "Come on, girls! We're going out!"

Cheers resulted as the two younger girls ran down the stairs. Kat came after them, a cloak about her and Katmon on her shoulder. "Kat, are you okay?" Alice asked.

Kat seemed to look up, but her face was still hidden in the shadows of her hood. "I'm fine." She croaked.

"You sure, Kat-san?" James asked.

Katmon looked up. "It's Mel-chan, Kat-chan's sister. Something's wrong." She explained.

Dana walked over and hugged Kat. "I'm sure she'll be okay, Kat."

"Arigatou, Dana-kun." Kat whispered. A beep went off under Kat's cloak. "Oh, kuso." Kat grumbled as she pulled out her computer, which had resized to small, and and enlarged it again.

Kat-chan,
I'm so glad I found ya! I've been looking everywhere! I'm in a different world, and I found some Digidestined. They call themselves Tamers. Kinda like Watchers, ne? They have a different way of digivolution. It has something to do with cards.
Keepin' in touch,
Dai

Kat sighed and put together a reply. Dai wrote back, worry written all over the e-mail. Kat wrote back and looked back up at the Laffertys watching her. The hood of her cloak had fallen from her face and they could see the worry lines around her eyes, not to mention the lines of pain. She threw her hood back over her head and put her computer away. "I thought we were going out."

The others grinned. Dana hopped up and down. "Then let's go! I'm hungry!" They all laughed and walked out to the car. Kat sat in the middle of the back, Zoe and Dana on either side. James drove and Alice kept looking back at the girls in the back seat.

"Mom, you don't need to watch us so attentively." Zoe grumbled.

"And I'll be fine. Mel-chan's asleep, I can't feel her pain as well as before." Kat explained, but didn't remove the hood.

Alice nodded. "Okay... I guess. Kat, I don't know if you've heard about what's been going on around here lately..."

"I didn't get the whole story, but after the quick look I got at the front page, I'm guessing it's pretty big."

"It is." James said. "Terrorists flew planes into the Twin Towers in New York, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA. I don't know if those things exist in your world..."

Kat grimaced under her cloak. "They do. I used to live in Arlington."

"Wow... Is it scary to hear about this happening where you grew up?" Dana said.

Kat sighed. "It would have been worse had I known any who died. On my earth, the Pentagon is no more than a monument. No one works there anymore. My earth is... quite different from this one. Other than that, hai, I guess it's pretty scrary to hear about something like that happening."

"I know someone who lost his parents in that attack." Zoe said. "His name is Amerigo. His grandparents were taking him to go live elsewhere in America. He's only seven, so I used to babysit him."

"I 'member Amerigo. He was a good friend. I wouldn't mind him coming back." Dana said softly.

*Amerigo... Why do I feel I need to remember that name?* Kat thought to herself as the McDonalds came into sight.

"Food!!" Dana cried as the group got out.

They walked in and James looked at the lot. "What do you all want to eat?"

"Nuggets!!" Dana cried. Zoe nodded.

"Nothing for me." Kat said softly.

Dana looked at her pleadingly. "I'm not gonna eat if you won't, Kat." She threatened.

Kat smiled under the hood. "Then I guess I'm stuck with nuggets." Dana cheered as James and Alice went up to order and Zoe led them to seats.

A younger boy came up behind their table and laughed at Kat. "What, is your face really so ugly you have to hide it."

Kat looked at him. "I'll cut out your tounge if you say something like that again." She threatened.

"Hah! You don't scare me, bitch!" The boy laughed.

Kat glared at him. "Dete ike! Kono shiri-nuke-me!" She said angrily. Katmon hissed at the boy from under the cloak to add to the affect.

The boy took off, scared of the strange girl. James came over. "Kat-san, that wasn't nice."

"He was pissing me off. I said what I had to say." Kat returned.

James sighed. "Just, don't say anything like that again, people might take it the wrong way."

"What did you say, Kat?" Dana asked.

"Nothing I'm planing on repeating in English anytime soon." Kat replied.

"Amerigo?!?!" Zoe said suddenly. The other two, Dana and Kat, joined her at the window. A young boy was walking around, a small creature on his shoulder, outside the McDonalds.

Kat gasped. The others looked at her. "That's a flippin' Digimon!" She said and ran out the door. "Excuse me!" She shouted to the boy. Her hood had fallen back and the boy smiled when he saw her face.

"I'm Amerigo. This is Amerikamon. You must be Kat. I am pleased to meet you." The boy said.

Kat found herself tounge-tied. "H-ho-how do you know my na-name?!?"

"My father told me. He sent me here to help you save your world from the evil one. Pappy also says their are others like us, with little monster companions."

"How many, Amerigo-kun?" Kat asked quickly.

Amerigo shrugged. "Pappy didn't say how many, just that they are all in this area."

"This ar--"

"Kat! We found you..." Zoe said, then saw Amerigo. "Amerigo, I thought you were going somewhere with your grandparents."

"Pappy sent me back here, Zoe." Amerigo said.

"Dummy, pappy isn't here. We need to call your grandparents."

"No! Pappy said to help Kat! I need to help Kat!"

Kat put a hand on Zoe. "It's his destiny to help me, Zoe. Let him go. Dea works in mysterious ways. I'm not surprised this is one of them. I'm here for a reason, and this reason is now appearant." She turned to Amerigo. "Shall we go search for the others now, or do you want food first?"

"Uhm..."

"She's over there! I think she's working for them! She spoke in a weird language to my son!" A man's voice shouted. The group turned to see police and the father of the boy Kat had spoken to running towards them.

"Chikusho!" Kat said angrily. "Get behind me, I'll handle this." She told the others.

"But, this isn't your world!" Dana cried. "You won't know what to do!"

Kat smiled. "I've gotten out of tighter spots than this one, Dana-kun. Leave this to me!" She met the police and man in the middle of the parking lot, her hood up again. "May I help you gentlemen?" She said softly.

"Miss, we have a complaint about you speaking in another language to a young boy. Could you please explain this."

Kat took off her hood. She now resembled a young Japanese women of twenty. "Hai. I spoke Japanese, it's my native language. It's rude of little boys to make coments of the clothing others wear. I'm sorry to have upset everyone, but I replied the way I alway do, in my language. I'm staying here with an old friend of my father and his family." The other three walked up behind her.

"I apologize for the trouble, miss. Tensions are high, and different languages, especially when coming from one in your get-up, can scare anyone."

"Of course. I was not thinking when I said what I said. Please accept my apologizes." Kat said.

The boy's father was blushing. "No, I'm sorry. I'll teach my son a lesson when we get home..."

"Nai! Don't punish a boy for a small thing like that! No one was hurt, at least not in any life-threatening way, just explain to him what he did, and tell him not to do so again." Kat said hurriedly.

The man nodded. "Thank you, I will take that into consideration." Everyone departed and Kat threw her hood up again.

"That was cool! How'd you change your face so quickly?!" Dana said. The other two gave her facinated looks too.

Kat grinned and dragged the lot back in. "My little secret." She said softly.

James and Alice gave them looks that said 'Sit down and eat now' when the group got to the table. They sat and Kat gave Amerigo her nuggets. "Well handled, Kat-san." James commented. "I don't know very many who could do something like that as you did."

"I've been through enough to be able to handle things like that." She looked at Amerigo. "Can Amerigo-kun also stay, he's become part of my small band of oddities."

Everyone smiled. Alice nodded. "We have enough room. You can go see if you can find more 'oddities' while the girls are at school, if you can disguse yourself enough to keep out of any trouble."

"Not too hard to do. I'll see if I can come up with a device to trace 'Destined tonight, it'll make our search go faster." Everyone nodded and they stood.

"We have one more stop to make before we head home. Come on. Amerigo, you can come too." Alice said, leading them out to the car.

They made their stop, and even pursuaded Kat to give the money to the fund people. Then they rode home. Zoe, Dana, and Amerigo were put to bed and the other three sat donwstairs.

"We're happy to help in any way we can, Kat-san." James said.

Kat smiled. "I know, it's just... I don't know how you guys could help. It's a hard life."

"You were the one on the dragon, weren't you?" Amerigo's voice asked form the stairs.

The others looked at him. "What was that, Amerigo-kun?" Kat asked.

"In the big cave, the one with everyone fighting, when the four other beasts came to save you, you were the one on the dragon, weren't you."

"How do you know about that? That was years ago, not to mention a different world and time period."

"Pappy showed me. He showed me that time, and when the evil one blasted the room with everyone in it, and when you lost and died."

James and Alice gasped. Kat turned her sad eyes to the window. "Hai. I guess he did. I don't know what happened after I blacked out when Demon killed us. All I remember is waking up in the street and hearing the cries of pain as Demon destroyed all the capital cities of the world, all those humans, most of them innocent. I guess, we're all hoping, that if we defeat Demon, we'll get our friends and family back... But we also know that if Demon defeats us, we won't be coming back. This is our final chance, and we understand this." A tear fell down her face. "I just wish we could have stopped this from happening in the first place." Kat burst into tears.

"Kat! What's wrong?!" Alice cried.

Kat looked up, her face streaked with tears. "It's my fault, ya know. Demon is in my world, killing my people, because of me. I brought Ken back, even though he told me not to. Demon opened a rip that way. I would give anything to go back to that time period and keep that rip from starting in the first place. Me and my damned soft heart is gonna detroy my world and there's nothing I can do about it!" She screamed and disappeared in a flash of light, leaving the five humans and two Digimon in the house.

Katmon sighed and sat in the chair Kat had vacated. "She'll be back. She just needs to work off the past."

"Is that the real reason the evil one reigns in your world?" Amerigo asked.

Katmon looked at him. "I'm not sure. I don't think so, since we reset time, but that might be a part of it. Kat grew up with her mother, who she never got too close to, and her brother. She blames herself for her brother's death, since she was unable to do anything to save him, or her father. Both were in the room Demon blew up. Her mother I do believe was killed by Demon. Her sister, Mel, is right now in the very hands of Demon, being tortured for any information she has on the other Digidestined. Mel destroyed her only link to the other Digidestined, other than her computer and ring, which are hidden. Kat feels responsible for Mel."

"Why? They're the same age." Zoe asked from the stairs.

Katmon sighed again. "Kat feels it was her fault Demon killed Mel a short time ago. Maybe it was...maybe it was Mel's fault for going back, maybe it was Demon's fault. I think it was Demon's fault, so does Mel and Catmon, Mel's Digimon. Kat seems to think differently."

"How did Mel die?" Dana asked.

"She was drawn back to the World of Darkness. I went after her, and she, under Demon's spell, captured me, threatening my life. I told her I hated her and that she had lost me for good. She told me later that the one thing she feared most in her life was losing me. Demon appeared and tried to kill me, but Mel jumped in the way. She died, I lived. She's back now, but it was my fault, and don't tell me it wasn't, and I'll never forgive myself." Kat had reappeared in the kitchen. She slid to her knees and hissed out a painful breath.

"Kat!" Dana cried as they all ran over to check her.

"Mel?" Katmon asked.

Kat shook her head. Catmon appeared behind her, covered in blood. "Katmon, Mel's dead." Catmon said softly. Kat nodded.

"Im-Impossible!" Katmon cried.

Kat held out a blood soaked hand. "He killed her, to get these." In her palm lay the Crests of Respect and Darkness. "I just barely got these away from Demon. The guards helped me. They will no doubt be killed, but there was nothing anyone could do to help that."

"Mel can't be dead..." Katmon said.

"I wish that were true, Katmon-chan, but I saw her head, and it wasn't attached to her body nomore." Kat punched the wall. "I wish I hadn't told us to split up! I'm such a baka!"

"No, you're not. You did what you had to do. Kat, Mel believe in you to the very last. She never gave up hope in you. Don't let that hope be destroyed. She'd want you to keep on going. Let's find the others and destroy Demon. Then Mel will finally be able to rest peacefully." Catmon said.

Kat nodded. "I guess this means I have two bottomless pits to feed. How great. I'm jumping for joy." She put the two crests around her neck and hid them under her shirt with her other ones. She looked up at Amerigo. "The sooner we go, the faster we come back."

Amerigo nodded. "Then let's go. Amerikamon!" The Digimon ran in.

Catmon and Katmon jumped up onto Kat's shoulders as she stood. They all turned to the computer and Kat took Amerigo's hand as she placed her ring to the screen.

"WE WILL SURVIVE!!!" Kat, Katmon, and Catmon screamed as they were all pulled through. The call rang through the neighborhood, waking many. It was a very American saying, for the times they were in.
