“I don’t care what you say,
Bant, he is not in love with me!”
“Yes, he is.
Qui-Gon has it bad for you. And
face it, Obi…you feel the same way.” Obi-Wan
made the funniest face she had ever seen a humanoid make.
He almost looked Rodian…minus the green skin and suction-cup thingies
on his head.
“No way…not true.
Qui, he…he’s like my father, Bant. Its just gross.”
“Then why don’t you go ask
him, genius?”
“Because I know!”
But then, Obi-Wan started to doubt his own words.
It was true that his bond with Qui-Gon was stronger and ran deeper than
any non-life bond the Council had ever seen, but that was beside the point…wasn’t
it? And how had they even gotten
onto the subject anyway?
Obi-Wan stormed off, leaving his
friend to gloat. This was going to
take some serious thinking. He
headed out to the gardens first, hoping to meditate and find the answer in the
Force, but his mind was so preoccupied by the doubt Bant had caused that he
could not find his center. Here he
was, twenty years old, and still acting like an initiate.
Giving up on that idea, he next
headed over to the practice rooms where the elder Knights were working with the
Senior Padawans to prepare for the Trials. For a moment, Obi-Wan was distracted
by the latest object of his seemingly unending lust: Alysia. She was a
beautiful, graceful humanoid Knight with long braids the same color as his hair
and eyes like sparkling emeralds. He
watched her for nearly an hour, wondering exactly what it would take to get her…and
his mind drifted back to what Bant had said.
Obi-Wan had thought the answer
was right in front of him, but apparently he had been very wrong.
True, Qui-Gon was a very attractive man…there was no denying that; even
he could see it – but wasn’t that Bant’s whole point?
Well, there was only one way to find out…
Leaving his daydreams behind,
Obi-Wan gathered his wits and headed for their quarters.
Just as expected, he found his Master stretched out on the sofa, studying
for their next mission.
“Master, may I ask you
something?” he asked, suddenly very nervous.
“Of course, Padawan.”
Qui-Gon laid the holo on his lap and turned his full attention toward the
fidgeting young man in the doorway.
“Do you love me?”
Obi-Wan asked, and Qui-Gon would have laughed had he not seen the serious
look on the young man’s face as he crossed the room and knelt next to the
sofa.
“Of course, Obi-Wan.”
The younger Jedi smiled, causing the older one to smile in return.
Then, Obi-Wan leaned up and kissed his Master right on the mouth. It was a shock, and not entirely unpleasant, but Obi-Wan had
his answer. When it was over, his
grin grew even wider than it had been.
“No, I was right.”
And Obi-Wan left the room.
Once outside, he collapsed
against he wall in a fit of laughter. That
was the silliest thing he had ever done. At least now he could tell Bant that she was wrong.

Back inside their quarters,
Qui-Gon picked up the forgotten holo and continued his studies.
Over the years, he had learned not to question the odd behavior of his
Padawan, as all would eventually be revealed.
But he was pretty sure his Padawan had been told the same crazy rumor
that he himself had heard earlier that day.
Well, at least they both had their answers now.
