"Putty root" derives from the fact that Native Americans used the glutinous matter from crushed bulbs to mend broken pottery and fasten objects together. The leaf and flower come from the current season's growth (Eve) while the previous year's bulb (Adam), which produced Eve, is still present The entwined roots are suggestive of a pair of lovers, another possible derivation of the Adam & Eve moniker.
