Episode 0 explanation: The cross around his neck was given to him by a girl named Midii Une who was taken in by Trowa's mercenary group. Later, all of the men in Trowa's group, the very men who raised him, are slaughtered in a battle with the Alliance. Someone had betrayed their position -- and Trowa realizes who it is. Midii had been wearing a little electronic device around her neck the entire time she had been with the group, transmitting to the Alliance: she was a paid spy for the Alliance, working only to feed her brothers and sick father. The cross was also a radio transmitter, and saved Trowa from being killed. He pulls a gun on Midii, but realizes that they are too much alike for him to destroy her. She is heartbroken about what she has done, and yells, "I can't even tell the person I like that I like him!" Trowa can't forgive what she's done, though, and leaves, never to see her again.
He also says in this manga, "I am a soldier looking for a home." This is why it is so significant when, while talking to Dorothy on the Libra near the end of the series, he tells her that the reason he has to keep on living, even if his life has no meaning, is that: "I have a home to go back to." Catherine has done so much for him by giving him just this one simple thing.
