| "Shinigami, the God of Death" To look at him, you wouldn't think this name suited Duo Maxwell. He is friendly, easy-going, and makes jokes often (much to the annoyance of Heero). He is liked by everyone, and seems to be a carefree teenager. This appearance is deceiving, however; on the battlefield, Duo is perfectly capable of being serious, and fights like a demon -- the God of Death. |
| Relationships: Duo's romantic partner is traditionally Hilde Shbeiker, an OZ convert turned good-guy. They seem to be the most popular match in the show, as their light-hearted manner plays well in the show's usually grim atmosphere. In Yaoi interpretations, Heero, Duo's otherwise closest friend, is portrayed as his partner. Quatre and Duo are also close friends. Duo doesn't have a particularly strong relationship with any of the show's "villains". |
| Background: As a young child, Duo lived on the streets with a group of war orphans. (No one knows his real name.) He was taken in by the Maxwell Church, as related in the Episode Zero manga, where his adopted family, Father Maxwell and Sister Helen, cared for him and nurtured him. This was the time in his life when he adopted his trademark braid and clerical collar. When the Alliance attacked and destroyed the Maxwell Church, Duo escaped, but Father Maxwell and Sister Helen were killed. Years later, Duo was a stowaway on a salvage ship that happened to be carrying Professor G, the engineer of Gundam 02. From then until Operation Meteor, Duo trained to be a Gundam pilot. |
