Reference Material: D. J. Conway's "Dancing With Dragons"

This is the basis of all Dragon rituals in the practice of Dragon Magick. The practicing magician can insert his / her own music, dance, meditation, or personal rituals that they have written in appropiate places without disrupting the flow of energy. When you read through this ritual you will see that certain things are to be done at certain times other than that the Magician can do what feels right to her / him. It is important that you have all the appropiate tools and materials you will need before starting. Make any preparations so that nothing disturbs you. If you are practicing decreasing Magick it is important to remember that anywhere in the ritual that it says "circle clockwise" ,you should circle counterclockwise. Another way of doing this is to cast a clockwise outer circle with a counterclockwise inner circle.

Setting up Ritual :

Begin the ritual by going to the East, with sword in power hand "draw" Magickal circle on floor around ritual area. This is done by pointing sword at the floor and seeing great flames shooting from it. Move clockwise around the circle with this flame ; end by overlapping it in the East. While drawing the circle, say:

By Dragon Power, This Circle is Sealed.

Return to the altar. Point the Sword at Dragon Pentacle and say:

Dragons of Spirit, Highest of Dragons and Most Powerful, Bless This Altar With Your Fire. Let Us Be One In Magick, O Dragons Great and Wise.

Set the Water Chalice on the pentacle. With the wand in power hand, circle the chalice three times clockwise with the wand and say:

Air, Fire, Earth, Bring Power Forth. Water Of Land and Sea, Purified Be.

Hold the Chalice high and say:

Draconis! Draconis! Draconis!

Sprinkle the water lightly around the circled area beginning and ending in the East. Set the dish of salt on the Pentacle. Circle it three times clockwise with the wand and say:

Water, Air, Fire, Hear My Desire. Salt of Earth and Sea, Purified Be.

Sprinkle a few grains of salt to each corner of the altar. Circle the incense burner three times with the wand, say:

Fire of Dragons, Fire of Earth, You Are Purified. Bring Power Forth.

Circle the Incense and Herbs three times clockwise with the wand, say:

Incense Magickal, Incense Bold, Awake The Dragons, As Of Old. I Call You Purified.

Put a small amount of incense onto the burning coals. Lift the burner by the chains and touch it lightly to the Pentacle. Lift it high over the altar, say:

Draconis! Draconis! Draconis!

Then carry it clockwise around the circle, beginning and ending in the East.Return the burner to the Altar.Take up Sword in both hands and kneel before the Altar.Mentally dedicate self to the study of Dragon Magick.Project your interest and love for Dragons as strongly as possible. Continue doing so for several minutes, then rise and point the Sword at the Dragon Pentacle and say with power and confidence:

Behold, All Dragons and Rulers of Dragons, I am (magickal name), a Magician Who Seeks Dragon Magick. With (name of Sword) In My Hand, I Enter the Realm of The Dragons,Not For Physical Battle, But For Knowledge and Power. I Greet You, O Dragons Ancient and Wise, and Await Your Blessing and Guidance.

Continue holding the Sword outstretched until you feel the bleesing of the Dragons. It is for this reason that a light sword is best used in ritual. When the flowing power of the Dragons Blessing has lessened, lower the sword. Still holding the sword in Power hand, take up the Dragon Pentacle in the other and go to the East. Point the sword at the Eastern position and hold the Pentacle facing outward. Draw a Invoking Pentagram with the Sword (see illustration), say:

From Sairys (sair'-iss), Ruler Of The Eastern Dragons Fair, Comes Now The Wondrous Power Of Air

Feel the power of Air entering body with sword outstretched. When the flow stops,go to the South.Hold up the Dragon Pentacle again , draw an invoking Pentagram with the Sword, say:

From Fafnir (faf'-near),Ruler Of Dragons Of The South, Comes Cleansing Fire From Dragon Mouth

Note:Feel the power of Fire entering body and when it stops go to the next direction.Repeat the process of Holding up the Dragon Pentacle and drawing a invoking pentagram for each of the directions.
Go to the West, say:

From Naelyan (nail'-yon) Ruler Of Dragons Of The West,Comes The Power Of Water

Draw into the body the power of Water.Go to the North and say:

From Grael (grail), Ruler Of Dragons Of The North, The Power Of Earth Does Now Come Forth

Draw into oneself the power of Earth. When it stops return to the Altar, lay aside the Sword and Dragon Pentacle. Add the appropiate herbal incense to the incense burner according to the ritual you are performing. At this point insert the appropiate chants and workings for the particular spellworking or meditation to be performed. If there is a problem that is unsolveable by physical means or by magic then now is also the time to ask the Dragons for advice on how to solve it. The Dragons are able to give new insight into ways of solving it.Continue to feel their power and direction as their directions are written down. When finished with the spellworking, tap staff three times and chant:

I Thank You, Dragons Old And Wise, Of Earth And Fire, Water, Skies, For Sharing Wisdom Here With Me. As We Will, So Shall It Be

Always approach the Dragons as Equals not as a force to be ordered or conquered.Set the Wine Chalice on the Pentacle. Circle it three times with the wand, say:

Cup Of Power, Cup Of Might, Dragon Magick, Be Here This Night

Drink the Wine (apple cider or grape juice may be substituted if unable to drink wine), saving back some to be poured outside on the ground later as an offering to the Dragons. If it is not possible to pour the offering outside then leave it on the Altar for about an hour, after closing your ritual. Now is the an excellent time to chant and use free-form dancing and invite the Dragons to share in the raised energy and joy of being a Magician.Talk to them about hopes and dreams, listen to see if they have suggestions or words of encouragement. This is an opportunity for close friendships to be forged.

Closing the Ritual

To close the ritual, take the sword and go to each of the directions draw a banishing pentagram (see illustration) and say the appropiate words for that direction

To the East, say:

Go In Peace, Dragons Of The East, And Return Again In The Ritual Hour

To the South, say:

Go In Peace, Dragons Of The South, And Return Again In The Ritual Hour

To the West, say:

Go In Peace, Dragons Of The West, And Return Again In The Ritual Hour

To the North,say

Go In Peace, Dragons Of The North, And Return Again In the Ritual Hour

Return to the Altar. Raise both arms, say:

Farewell To You, O Dragons Fair, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. Together We Make Magick Well By Power Deep and Dragon Spell. In Peace Go Now. Return Once More To Teach Me Magick and Ancient Lore. Draconis! Draconis! Draconis!

Cut the circle with a backward sweep of the Sword across the boundary line. Extinguish the candles. Clear the Altar of all tools except any offerings to the Dragons if unable to pour outside.

This ritual is the basis of any and all rituals of Dragon Magick. Any specific spellworkings need to be placed within this framework at the appropiate times.

Draconic Circle Casting

by,

Kerowyn J'Karrah SilverDrake, 1994

This pretty much your standard Circle casting, the purpose of which is two-fold: first, to keep the energies you are raising contained until you are ready to release them, and second, to keep out any unwanted energies and/or entities that may be attracted to your magical workings.

The items you will need are:

1) A wand, athame, staff, sword, or just the index finger* of your dominant hand (I prefer a wand myself, if I'm going to use a tool, as it is easy to make one yourself, we all have memories of finding a "Magic Wand" as a child, and few "authority types"  will have a problem with a nicely decorated "stick");

*Note: unless you have consecrated all of your tools already, use your finger to direct the energies

2) Incense -- stick, cone, powdered, or loose herb; incense holder; incense-specific charcoal (for loose incense); matches or lighter (preferred);

3) Dish of clean water

4) Dish of salt (sea salt preferred, which can usually be found in the "ethnic foods" and/or baking section of your local grocery store but regular table salt is just as good);

5) Quarter candles and holders in the following colors: East, South, West, North

6) A special candle, or a nice figurine, or picture to represent your Dragon friends

(Other rituals and/or spells may require additional tools, but the above list are the basics used in tool-based ritual workings.)

The Casting:

Step 1: Begin in the East, if possible, using the tool of your choice  move around the circle South, West, North and back to East visualize red/orange Dragon fire erupting from the tool to form a flaming perimeter around the circle and say:

By Dragon Fire and the power of my will let the circle be sealed!

Repeat 4 times or until your return to the East.  "Tie" the circle off using the symbol for infinity .

Step 2: Light the incense and again move from the East. As you move "see" the smoke driving all unwanted energies from the circle to be consumed by the Dragon Fire and say:

By Dragon's Breath and the combined powers of fire and air, let the circle be purified and sealed.

Repeat 4 times or until you return to the East. "Tie" the circle off using the symbol for infinity .

Step 3: Stir sea salt into the water dish and visualize the salt destroying any unwanted energies in the water.  Project the Dragon energy into the water until you "know" the water is pure and say:

The sacred salt now destroys all harmful and unwanted energies from this water.  By Dragon magic I call you purified.

Beginning in the east, liberally sprinkle the circle while visualizing the combined powers of earth and water destroying any remaining unwanted energy within the circle.  As you traverse the Circle, say:

By Dragon Tears and the combined powers of earth and water, let the circle be consecrated and sealed!

Repeat 4 times until you return to the East. "Tie" the circle off using the symbol for infinity .

Step 4: Return to the altar and say out loud:

Now is the circle sealed and the boundary made.  By Dragon Magic and the power of my will, let nothing but beneficial energy enter in and nothing but beneficial energy emerge for the betterment of myself and my Clan.  So Mote It Be!

The circle is now cast and you are ready for the next step: Calling the Guardians of the Quarters

Store Your Magick Circle

 Kerowyn SilverDrake, 1994

There are occasionally situations when it is not possible to cast a formal protective circle, even thought it may be very necessary.  This spell allows you to cast a formal circle then store it in a consecrated, energized crystal for later use.  The crystal can be of any type, provided it is one you have a strong affinity for.  It should, however, be one you can wear as a pendant, in a ring or on a bracelet.

Needed Items:

     Normal altar equipment

Protection incense or Dragon's blood, or sage

     Cinnamon or Dragon's Blood oil

     1 Crystal (any type)

Perform Draconic Circle Casting

Invite Dragon Companions (optional)

Step 1: Raise the crystal high in salute to your attending Dragons and say:

Behold this crystal!  From the forces of Creation has it come.  Many paths it has taken before finding its way to me.  I accept it as a gift from the Earth.  May it serve me well from this point forward so that I may better walk the path which I have chosen.

Step 2: Dip the crystal in the salt water, then pass it through the incense smoke.  As you do this, visualize the crystal as first cloudy and dirty, then becoming bright and clean.  Know that the crystal is being purged of any unwanted energies or influences and say:

Now does the combined powers of the elements drive out all unwanted energies and influences from this crystal.  From this days forward it shall be cleansed and pure, accepting only those energies which I allow.  May it serve me always that I may grow in strength, wisdom and honor.

Step 3: Anoint the crystal with the Dragon's blood oil and charge it with protective energy by chanting:

Dragons of Power, Dragons of Light,

Dragons of Wisdom, Dragons of Might,

Lend me your magic, lend me your aid,

Lend me your guidance as this spell is made!

Continue chanting until you feel the crystal is fully charged, then place it back on the altar.

Step 4: Extend your arms toward the perimeter of your circle and "grab" hold of it.  With your mind, draw the circle inward as you pull your arms into your body.  As the circle's edge approaches the altar, visualize a vortex of energy forming above the crystal.  "See" the energy of the circle being drawn into the crystal and being stored there.  When all of the circle's energy has been drawn into the crystal, visualize the substance of the crystal forming a seal over the point of entry and say:

Now is the crystal sealed and this circle stored.  So shall it remain until it is needed for protection or defense.  If such a time should come to pass let the crystal be opened and the circle released by the speaking of a word, and let that word be ________.

This word should be one that is unique enough that you will not say it by accident, but also one which you will be able to remember easily (this is the hard part).  Thank your Quarter guardians, and your companions for allowing you to store a portion of their energies.  When you are not carrying the crystal with you, it should be stored in a safe location.

Closing the Circle

by,

Kerowyn J'Karrah SilverDrake, 1994

When you are done with your ritual, it is a good idea to formally close the circle and release any residual energies that may still be lingering about.  This is just good magical housekeeping.  The closing of a circle can be as fancy or simple as you like.  I prefer the simple. With that in mind, here is the Draconic Tradition's Circle Closing:

Step 1: Thank your Dragon friends for their participation.  Use whatever words you feel best expresses your gratitude for their aid and friendship.

Step 2: In reverse order, Thank the Dragons of the Quarters for their assistance:

North: From the lands of the Dragons of the North, you came to my Call and I thank you with all my heart!  As you return from whence you came, Great Dragon, I wish you farewell and safe journey until we meet again.  Hail and farewell!

West; From the lands of the Dragons of the West, you came to my Call and I thank you with all my heart!  As you return from whence you came, Great Dragon, I wish you farewell and safe journey until we meet again.  Hail and farewell!

South: From the lands of the Dragons of the South, you came to my Call and I thank you with all my heart!  As you return from whence you came, Great Dragon, I wish you farewell and safe journey until we meet again.  Hail and farewell!

East: From the lands of the Dragons of the East, you came to my Call and I thank you with all my heart!  As you return from whence you came, Great Dragon, I wish you farewell and safe journey until we meet again.  Hail and farewell!

Now, there are several things you can do with the energy of the Circle's boundary.  Some people "ground" it.  This entails visualizing the energy sinking into the ground to be reabsorbed into the Earth.  Others like to visualize it dissipating on the winds and returning to the cosmos.  My personal choice is to "grab" hold of the energies and "push" them out until they merge with the energies of my house shields, adding another layer of protection on my personal space (waste not, want not!).  Over time, you can build up such strong protections that nothing short of a major god can ever breach them.   When you are done, it is not uncommon to feel a little disconnected from the "mundane" or every day world.  Thus, at this time, it can be a good idea to eat a little something to help "ground" you back into the regular swing of things.

All Rituals when done in the practice of Dragon Magick can be inserted in the proper place of the
