"the 'ford' in Astleford is believed to indicate that it was originally an English name and it was thought that the Astleford's entered Ireland from Great Britain with Oliver Cromwell. When David Astleford was at Dublin Genealogical Office in Dublin in 1950, they confirmed that the Astlefords did come to Ireland from Great Britain. The inscription on the headstone in the old churchyard is as follows:
Here lieath the body of Samuel Ashelfoard who departed this life January the 7th 1768 - Aged 68 years."
