Colonization in Africa
Map of colonies in Africa.
Colonization is a term that usually refers to the rule of a group of people by a foreign power. Colonization has some of the following features that make it colonization; rulers of the colonies usually belong to different ethnic groups; most colonies are separated by an ocean from the ruling nation; is very similar to imperialism; the people living on the land and the land itself make up the colony; foreign powers are sent to live in that colony to govern it, and to use it as a source of wealth; colonialism dates back to ancient times; most nations want colonies only to gain economic benefits; land is wanted for valuables such as, gold, diamonds, and spices for themselves; colonizing powers often possess superior technologies or at least advanced military weapons or tactics.

Effect of Colonialism:

Prevented or discouraged colonies from industrializing or expanding the kinds of products they turned out. Trade regulations and tariffs generally limited exports only to the home country.
