Mariana
Fae opens a large gateway, letting you though first, then she follows after you. You study your new surroundings. You find yourself in a dark forest, with a heavy mist hangin on the ground. The trees are low to the ground, and the branches so thick that hardly any light shines though them. Not a whisper of breeze stirs the mist or the leaves, but The lack of light and the mist around your ankles makes the woods seem very spooky.
"Follow me," the elf says in a quite voice. Fae leads you though the dark forest, down a trail so small that it is bairly visibal under the mist. After a good deal of walking, the forest opens into strange clearing.
Taking up most of the clearing is a large pond. At the other end of the clearing, the pond ends abruptly up against a sheer rock wall that streaches upwards, ending the forest, and the pond. Mist hangs heavly over the pond as well, floating slowly across the surface, as if stired by something below the surface.
As you slowly aproach the edge, you notice that the ground around it is wet with water. The trees, though absent from the clearing, still reach over the pond and shelter it from the sun. The cliff wall of the other side of the clearing blocks sunlight as well, leaving the clearing damp and chilled. You look out across the pond's murky expanse. A combination of the mist and the depth of the water makes it vertually impossible to see any farther than a few inches below the surface. Fae taps you gently on the sholder, and you turn around to face her.
"Here," she says softly, as if afarid to disturbe the placide waters. She holds out a fisted hand, and indicates to hold your hand out. You do so, palm up and open. The elf gently places somethin in your open hand. You look down at it, to see what it is. Two things rest in your hand. One is a small ball, the size of a large marble. It shimmers blue, as if water is swirling inside of it.
The other is much larger, taking up most of your hand. It seems to glow from the inside out, as if lighted from an inner sorce. You move your hand slightly, trying to find more room for it because of its size. As if by magic, the glowing white ball shrinks down to the size of the first. You gasp, and nearly drop the two. Fae laughes.
"You wanted it to be smaller, right?" you nod, wonder how she knew. "Well, that ball is magic. It can arange itself to any size that the holder desires. It will also give off light no matter where you are. The darker the place, the brighter it shines." You concentrate on the glowing ball, wishing it larger, to the size of a half dollar. The ball obeys, and you laugh in delight. You then turn the other ball over in your fingers, and ask Fae what this one does. "That one is even more powerful than the cold fire ball. If you place it in your hand, and then break it, you will be covered with a shild of water, that will keep your dry underwater, and let you breath water as well." You pause, and give Fae a strange look. Underwater? You ask. "Yes, if you want to see the dragon, you are going to have to go underwater. The cold fire will light your way so that you can see." You swallow your fears, and hand Fae the cold fire ball.
You place the other ball in your fingers and give it a squeeze. The outer layer explodes with a pop, leaving the liquidly insides to drip over your fingers. The cool liquid oozes over your fingers, and down your hand. Then, as if the liquid was activated, it begins to spread with purpose. The liquid moves at an alraming rate, and in a matter of seconds has covered your arm, and is working its way down your chest. The stuff doesn't seem to grow thin or run out of it to cover you with. Soon, everything but your head is covered. The icy liquid stops just below you chin, waiting.
"Good!" Fae says, "That worked just as it should have! Now that I know they work, I can make more!" Fae says gleefully, rubbing her hands together. Your jaw drops. You ask Fae if the thing had even been used before. Fae looks away. "Well, not techincly," You sputter in anger at the elf. She holds up a hand to forstall you. "Before you say anything, you have to admit, it is an intresting invention, isn't it?" You just glare at the elf. "Well, now the last thing we need to do is get the rest of it on your head. It stops at you chin because once it covers your head, you will not be able to breath air. It works pretty eaisly. Just concentrait, and wish is to cover your head." Fae hands you the cold fire globe, and you sigh, then concentraite like Fae said.
The liquid races upward, it's cold liquid tentacals covering your exposed skin. After a second or two, the liquid has covered your head. You try to draw a breath, and can't. Panic surges over you. Fae was right, you can't breath air with it on. You surge forward, propelled by a forcfully push in the back. You tumble into the water. You blink, looking around. You can see perfectly under the water. It is as if the surface has some sort of spell that makes it impossible to see though it. But now underneath it, the watery world is crystal clear to you, lighted by the sun and your cold fire.
You swim up to the surface and take a deep breath before surfacing. You wave to Fae with your empty hand to tell her you are alright, then you dive back under the water. Your breath is taken away by the beauty that you find below the surface.
Small schools of little fish with gleaming silver scales dart in and out of your path of vision. You turn yourself downward and swim twords the bottom. You can tell the pond floor is much deeper than you expected. You judge about twelve feet down. As you swim to te bottom, you inspect the things inhabiting the pond floor. Patches of thick green weeds sway softly to the music of the water. More of the beautiful silver fish dot the patches of green, making it look like little silver gems are growing on the weeds. The bottom is compleatly void of all rocks. Nothing but clean white sand. The sun light filters though the water making the white sand glitter and sparkle. Your globe of cold fire sends light patterns dancing across the pond floor.
When you finaly reach the bottom of the pond, you spend a few moments testing out your new found swimming skills. Fae's strange bubble seems to have given you more than just the ability to breath the water. After spending a few moments playing, you look around, trying to find where the dragon would be. You swim over in the direction of the sheer rock wall, hoping to find some clue as to why Fae shoved you into the pond.
You place your free hand along the smooth stone wall when your reach the cliff, looking for a path or anything that would led you to the dragon. You move up and down along the wall, looking for an opening. Finally, frustation overcoming you, you swim backwards, trying to get a good look at the wall. When you get far enough back, you look over the whole wall, but find nothing. You are turning away, ready to go to the surface and find Fae, when a huge patch of the sea weed catches your eye.
Frouning, you move twords it. All around you the sea weed is growing in small patches, and with a random placing. But this bit of sea weed seems almost out of place. It is growing in a straight line, right up against the cliff wall. It reaches high in the water, taller than you are by several feet. The sea weed is very dense, growing so close together that you cannot see the cliff wall behind it.
You swim twords it, confident that you will be able to find something back there. As you get closer, you hear what sounds like a growling sound. You stop swimming, looking around for the sorce of the noise. Your eyes narrow in suspison, the growling stoped when you stoped. You start swimming again, slower this time. The growling starts again, louder.
You turn around trying to find the source of the noise. The water distorts the sound, making it seem like it is coming from all directions. You let out a scream that is lost in the water as something hits your hard in the back. You are thrown forward, tumbling head over heals because of lost balence. As you right yourself, another attack comes. A whip-like tail with bristling spines screems thought the water with frightening speed for beging underwater; the strike aimed at your eyes. Becuase of your unformiltly with the water, you react slowly trying to get out of the way. The tail grazes your neck, not your face.
You stumble backwards, trying to get away. Then, as quickly as it came, the attack ended. You look around, trying to find the source of the attack, but there is not one to be found. You blink your eyes rapidly, trying to clear them. You reach a hand around to your neck and find a small scratch, but nothing more.
"Mystic!! What happened?" Your eyes open wide in suprise as a dark blue eel like creature swims out of the weeds, followed by a mermaid. The snake like thing is a dark blue color, so dark that it stands out like a gem against the white sand. Around where it's ears should be are little fins, also dark blue. It's eyes glitter in the light, sparkling brightly. A long line of spines trails down, starting at the top of it's head, and ending at the tip of it's tail.
The mermaid amazes you. She is very beautiful, with pale skin the color of the inside of a sea shell; pearly and off white. Her tail tapers down, and then splits into two fins. Her tail is a dark shade of green that matches perfectly with the dark sea grass. Her fingers are webed together with skin the same color as her tail. Her ears fan out into fins like the snake's, the same dark green as her tail and fingers. Her eyes glitter like emeralds. Her hair is a startling shade of red. It floats about her, dark red and curly. Around her neck is a sting of pearls. A similer string encompasses her slender waist. The snake looks proud.
"Well," it begins in a high feminine voice. "There was this strage creature that was coming close to the cave, and I attacked it and drove it off!" she finishes proudly.
"What did it look like, Mystic?" the mermaid askes. Mystic thinks for a moment, then nods.
"It was a weird pink color like coral, and it had two long fins, that didn't really look like fins. It was reallllly slow too." The little thing says perkly. The mermaid gasps.
"Mystic!! That was a human!!" Mystic cocks her head to the side, not understanding. "You remember Deborah?" the little thing giggles and spins in a circle.
"Yeah!! She comes to visit all the time! But this wasn't Deborah."
"Right," the mermaid says. "It was a visitor, here to see the dragon." Mystic's already huge eyes grow wider in fear.
"Oh no!! I scared off a visitor!!" Mystic wails. You decied it is time to come down. You swim quickly downwards, into their path of view. The mermaid looks at you for a second, and then smiles.
"Are you the human Mystic is refering to?" you nod. "I am so sorry about that, but Mystic is... young. She is just very brave and protective for such a little one." She pats Mystic on the head fondly. "Oh! By the way, my name is Mariana, and this is Mystic, a sea snake from Silver Valley. Mystic is one of the friends we have here at the Forest Lake for the dragon." You give your name, and they both greet you.
"Are you here to see the dragon?" Little Mystic askes in her child like voice and way. You nod eagerly. The little sea snake looks up at Mariana, asking permision silently. Mariana laughes.
"Yes, we can show the human around her home," Mystic lets out a squeel, and begins racing off into the grass. You and the mermaid trail after her. Mystic pokes her head out of the grass and gives you a sheepish look.
"Ummm.... I'm sorry about attacking you. I was just worred about protecting my friend..." You tell the little sea snake that you have no hard feelings. Her blue eyes begin to sparkle again, and she giggles. "Oh good! Well come on you slow pokes! Lets go!" She races back into the grass. Mariana flows though the grass with amazing ease, leaving you to work your way though in her wake. You swim though a wide, but short, stone tunnel after the two water creatures. The tunnel leads upwards, into the cliff wall.
After a few minuets, the tunnel opens up into a huge cavern. The first thing that you notice is that the entire place is white. The walls, floor, everything, seems to have been carved out of one giant peice of white marble. Veins of different shades of silver and gold flow though the marble, giving it a rich and beautiful look.
The floor is flat and level. The sides of the cave rise up in curving slopes to form the celing. The whole place is being lit by dozens of cold fire balls, much like the one you hold.
As you look around, you notice something strage. As you look closer, you realize that the top half of the cavern is filled with air! A large shelf of marble conected to the wall makes a small place out of the water.
Swimming not too far away is the most wonderful creature you have ever seen. She is blue from head to toe. A light blue on her body, and a slightly darker blue on main and wings, with little white spots about her. Mariana smiles at you.
"Would you like to meet her?" You nod eagerly, and hurry behind Maraina as you make your way twords the dragon. When you reach her, she reguards you with bright blue eyes. You stammer, saying how beautiful you think she is. The creature turns her head away slightly in modest imbaresment before turning back.
"Thank you. It is always nice to hear that." Her voice is soft, and sounds like the soft tinkling of water over rocks. "My name is Seisui. It means pure water in Japanese. I am a Cerulean water dragon."
"Not just any Cerulean!" Mariana says. Seisui smiles again.
"Well, I have a special mutation. Instead of bubble patterns across my scales, I have this whitesh tinge, and white spots." She says in a modest voice, not bragging or bosting. Just stating a fact.
"It is very special, and a rare occurance!" Seisui smiles again.
"Well, I bet you would like to get out of the water huh?" Mariana says, and you nod. "Ok, follow me, and rember to take a deep breath before you get out of the water." You thank her for reminding you. You swim up just below the surface of the water, and take a deep breath. You climb out of the water and on to the huge marble shelf. Once on top of it, you concentrait and will the liquid covering you to recied. It pulls away from you in a instant, pooling back into a little bubble like your first had it. You tuck it into your pocket for later use. Mariana and Seisui's heads pop up above the surface.
You breath in deep, and are suprised at how fresh and clean the air feels. You ask how this could be. This time, Seisui answers.
"There is a spell on the top of the cave to keep the air clean, fresh, and cool, so that you could live up here as long as you want." You nod, understanding.
You turn back to Mariana, and gasp, realizing that she had been above water for far too long. You ask how she can breath the air too. She laughes. "Well, since I am half human half fish, I can breath both air and water, but poor little Mystic can not." You look down and see Mystic playing off by herself in the water.
You look around and see a few differnt things. Off to one side, away from the edge of the water, is a big nest made out of the grass you saw back in the pond. A few toys sit next to it. You look closer at the nest, and notice something else sleeping amid the nest.
"Oh, that is Shimmer," Seisui says. She lifts the nest away from the creature carefully so you can see. A small white little creature that resembles a miniture dragon looks up at you with big red eyes, churping in distress from being woken from its nap. "She is Chesmu from Rose Caverns." You nod, and then pick up the bubble out of your pocket. "Shall Mystic and I escort you back to the surface?" You thank her for the tour, and thank Seisui for her kindness, then the two return you to the land.
