Rheadra's Compendium: Conversations with Ahtava

Having stayed at Ahtava's house for three days prior to this first entry, I was overwhelmed by his hospitality towards a traveler like myself. He was very generous in sharing his library with me. When we first sat down, I chose to ask him about magic.

Teacher Ahtava, I've heard you say that magic - that the elements - flow through the veins of my kind. What did you mean?

It's quite simple, dear. First, you must understand that magic and the elements are one in the same. Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Life, and Death; these, in different amounts, make up all forms of magic. And in truth, magic makes up everything. Every living creature, every patch of ground, the world itself is mage of magic.

So I have no more magic within me than you do? Or would you have more, being a skill mage?

Magic cannot be measured in amounts like that. Everything could be said to have the same magic within it. A skilled mage is simply better at doing more with that magic. Instead, it is better to look at the type of magic. All six elements exist within every creature - yes, even death - and some have more and less of different kinds. As a Flemereza'kat, you have more fire magic within you than a human, yet are lacking in water magic. This is why flames do not hurt you, and the cold bothers you so.

Can you tell me more about life and death magic, then? I can understand that the ground is made of earth magic - but how can a creature have death magic within it?

Just because there is magic doesn't mean there's much. A young, healthy girl like yourself has only the merest traces of death magic making up her body. Your life magic is much stronger. There are those who stand in the opposite of you, where they are powerful in death magic, but lacking in life: the undead. But it is a spectrum, remember... I know of a woman who's death magic was strong, but yet she was not fully undead. This was the way magic was woven within her.

It stands to reason that there are people who have more life magic, and even less death magic than I, right? But who are they?

There are those like myself, who have abosrbed the energies of a dragon of life - even the faintest hint of an offensive death magic spell will injure me badly - in that class. You could also argue that all living things are to life what you are to fire... there is truely no 'elementally neutral' being.

Fascinating. If magic is everywhere, what is a spell, then? Surely, it's not the creation of magic.

Of course not. A spell modifies magic, uses what is already there. It's akin to using the water of the river to clean yourself, or the meat of a deer for food. The spell is the action required to pour the water onto yourself, or prepare the food. It's the action to modify the magic to your needs.

Thank you, teacher. This has been most educating.

Our conversation finished, the next day I chose to move on towards another subject;
