Armstrong Woods
Armstrong Woods Redwood Preserve
After leaving Lassen Park on our way to the next motel, we stopped at Armstrong Woods, a preserve donated by the Armstrong family early in the 1900's to save a grove of coastal redwoods. The oldest redwood in this preserve is estimated at 1700 years. We stopped at the Parson Jones tree for a picture...if you can't read the sign it says, "Parson Jones, height-310 feet, diameter-13.8 feet, approx. age-1300 years." BIG!! The grove was dark and a little cooler than the central valley had been and so a nice relief...we even took a rest on some benches in one area and looked up into the treetops, several hundred feet over our heads.
