WHAT'S THE DIZZLE ON POPULARITY?

Popularity: it's something some of us have, some of want, some of abuse, and some of us shun. In every school there are people who are popular, and people who are not. This piece is about the people who abuse their position in the schoool social standings

You know the type of people I'm talking about: the type who think they can put anyone down because they have a higher social standing than that other person. No matter what your standing is, that's still bullying, and we all know how wrong that is, as it's pounded into our heads all the time...the label for these types of people is "preps", the stereotypes vary with the gender. With girls these are usually the girls who wear clothes that are made with very little fabric, wear way too much makeup, and are not as pretty as they think they are. The term for these people on the street is "slut". With guys, these people usually dress with lots of "bling bling", expensive clothes (phat pharm for example), are on a sports team and act as if they are "ganstahs". The term for these people is usually "retards".

A person I used to be very good friends with went down the popular path. We've grown a part, and in her speech about popularity, she had to this to say (subtly talking about me) "It's weird how people can be friends for a long time, and then one of them decides to be popular and the other one changes and they don't hang out with them anymore". I deeply apologize for not wanting to be a slut, maybe I should call her and apologize. end the sarcasm. That is not one of the reasons I stopped hanging out with her. She was always more popular than me, so I don't see her logic in that one. I stopped being friends with her because she was rude, she thought it would be fun to beat me up after school when I had to go to her house, and then say it was her "evil side". She talked about me behind my back. She seems to think that because she is popular, she can twist what happened in our past to her will and everyone will believe her. Another example of abuse of power.

My conclusion: look out. There are too many people out there who will abuse their social standing: either to bend the truth, or to put you down. If you know someone like this, STEER CLEAR! Unless of course it's River Pierce, and then direct him in my general direction.
