Egypt

This is the famous and majestic site of Abu Simbel. You have to set out early in the morning to reach it before the sun becomes too intense. The whole structure was moved when the Nasser dam was built, otherwise it would have been flooded. The entrance is between the two seated figures, and takes you through to gloomy and mysterious chambers.

The side streets of Alexandria are fascinating to walk around. If you look closely at this picture, it is possible to make out a miniature building on a plank across the road. This denotes the beginning of the carpenter's district. I was lucky enough to be shown around by Alexandrians.

The back streets of Cairo are also full of interesting spots. This building is in the old part of town, close to the citadel. The intricate geometric designs are Islamic features, which adorn much of the architecture of this zone. I lived for a year in Cairo, and enjoyed taking in the history and life of the city. This part of town is bustling and full. It is dotted with Islamic universities, Turkish baths, mosques, and the intense threaded bazaar of Can El Callili.
