This is a painting by Rawya Sadek, entitled, "Daily Rhythms". I saw this painting whilst I was living in Cairo in 1991, and I felt that it demonstrated life in Cairo well. As I have lived in different countries, I look for art that I feel expresses the mood of the country and aids my memory of that place.

This is part of a large wall painting in the monastery adjacent to the leaning tower of Pisa. The painting in its entirety is called the Universal Judgement, (1360-1370), and the detail in this picture is called simply, The Demon. I was struck by this detail when I saw it, as it uses negative form and the chaotic intermingling of naked bodies and snakes to produce this demonic apparition.

This is another picture from Egypt. It is an etching by Ahmed Morsi in the Kavafi suite, Edition 10. I enjoyed the rugged and symbolic nature of this etching, and the way in which the artist has managed to evoke strong emotion simply.

This powerful painting is entitled, Eye and Beard of God, 1965. Hundertwaser has used strong colors and forms to create a primitive yet tense painting. The way in which the picture seems to be out of joint and disproportionate, adds to the clashing colors and disorientation. Hundertwaser is looking for religious intensity, in a world of straight lines and mediocrity.
