Teaching with the Internet Presentation at the University of Guam's 21st Annual Language Arts Conference

Graduate students enrolled in ED638: Teaching with the Internet presented at the University of Guam’s 21st Annual Regional Language Arts Conference held November 14 and 15 at the University of Guam and Holiday Resort & Spa. The theme of the conference was Reading and Writing Across the Content Areas: Empowering English Language Learners. The students’ presentation titled Using Internet Tools to Enhance ESL Instruction explored web sites aimed at enhancing ESL and content area instruction, writing, collaboration, professional development, instructional technology, website designing, blogging, and assessment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Language and Literacy Activities~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Language and Literacy Master of Education students enrolled in the ED643 Literacy Assessment course completed the semester on December 1, 2008 with a presentation of their online LiveText Portfolio and Diagnostic Case Report at the University of Guam’s School of Education Literacy Center. The course focuses on using a range of formal and informal assessment tools and methods to diagnose and assess individual learners’ reading and writing development, to guide instruction, and to involve the learner in self-assessment.

University of Guam Language and Literacy Master of Education students enrolled in ED646, The Organization and Supervision of Reading Programs, course completed the semester on May 16, 2007, with a presentation of their online LiveText portfolio and final reflection at the UOG Computer Center.  The course introduced students to organization, administration, and supervision of school reading programs (K-12), with students examining the roles of reading personnel, evaluating major reading programs and developing, implementing and evaluating a reading program at the classroom and school level.  From left:  Crystal Franquez; Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera, instructor; and Barbara Jacala.

Presentation: Master of Education students enrolled in the ED642: Seminar in Literature for Children and Young Adults course completed the semester with a presentation of their Portfolio, Children’s Book Log, and Final Reflection at the University of Guam’s School of Education . The course focuses on being familiar with various types of children’s literature through extensive reading. Students read and critically evaluate a wide range of books, linguistic complexity, genre, aesthetics, interest, and cultural diversity. The courses focus on literacy instruction, including selection of existing second language materials, adaptation of materials and development of original materials for use in a second language or bilingual classroom. Technology Presentation: Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera and the St. John’s cohort in Instructional Technology completed the fall semester with the presentation of their WebQuest and LiveText online portfolios on December 6, 2006 at school’s Linux Computer Lab. Meaningful Book Projects: Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera and her ED894 students completed a 2 credit-hours Microsoft Word course by showcasing their meaningful book projects on March 27 at the GPSS Ed Tech Center in Tiyan.
