ORAL PROPHYLAXIS A dental cleaning or prophylaxis is done to prevent disease. If plaque is not removed on a regular basis, it can lead to cavities, tartar build up and bad breath. Tartar is a hard deposit which cannot be removed by brushing. Getting them off requires scrapping and scaling which can be done by hand or with an ultrasonic device. Polishing remove superficial stains. At the time the cleaning is done, an assessment of gum health is also made. At your cleaning visit, we will also give recommendations for home care and products that we believe may be of value to your individual needs.
FLUORIDE Fluoride treatments involve the placement of fluoride gel on your teeth for 1-3 minutes in the dental office. After the fluoride is removed from the teeth and the excess spit out, you should not eat or rinse for at least 1/2 hour. This allows the fluoride to be fully utilized by the teeth. Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay and to remineralize very small cavities. However, fluoride should only be taken in doses recommended by your dentist.
SEALANTS A dental sealant is a plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Grooves in these teeth are so narrow that a toothbrush cannot fit into the spaces to remove plaque. Dental sealants prevent dental decay in the grooves.
